Jack just ate a little bit of my mom's philodendron!!!! It is on the unsafe list!!!!! WHAT DO I DO?!?!?!? He ate a bunch of his pellets afterwords and drank water. This is what one website said will happen to animals: oral irritation, intense burning and irritation of the mouth, lips, tongue, excessive drooling, vomiting, difficulty in swallowing.


Can I give him anything to help? Please please help!!!

Shane, your AV should be able to be reached even though it is after hours. Every vet I have ever dealt with has an after-hours answering service that can convey a message to the vet. Keeping my fingers crossed that you get a quick reply from your avian vet (AV). Good luck!

If you have any aloe-detox, soak bread in it and give it to the bird!

How much of the plant did the bird eat?

Shane while you are finding a vet we will research the toxic plant. Make the call.

How long has it been since the bird ate the plant? How much did it eat? Does the bird have symtoms of being sick?

Okay, so I called the emergency animal hospital (they treat dogs cats birds and exotics) and the lady said that Jack may feel sick and vomit, if he vomits once or twice it is fine, if it is persistent call the animal poison control (she gave me the number).
It's been about 45 minutes now and he is acting 100% the same. He is eating, drinking, and really playing. I am keeping a really close eye on him.
Thanx for the advice, I just flipped out, I figured I would hurry and check for the plant toxicity, and wait for help from here, as I called the vet.
Poor Jack It was all my fault, he was on the recliner and I didn't realize he was close to a plant at all, and when I looked back, I saw Jack drop the vine from my mom's Philodendron. I ran over and there was only a pice about half the size of a dime (maybe a little smaller) taken out of the leaf. I was hoping he just dropped it but I couldn't find it (sucky flashlight though).

I found this information:

Philodendron (Philodendron scandeus)
Symptoms of illness: retching, vomiting, diarrhea, very sporadic mortality, (animals that eat many parts of the plant)
Poisonous part of the plant: leaves, but only when eaten in large quantities.

Shane you scared me! Now that I read your last post I can relax, a half dime size is not going to be devastating to you macaw! Keep a close eye on your bird. If the bird vomits you need to see the vet!
