Default Close call with a cage

I've had Tahoe in this cage: ever since I brought him home. Its a CA Malibu model. 18 by 20, shown exactly as depicted. I thought it was completely parrotlet proof- the bar spacing is appropriate, and I couldn't find anywhere visible for him to squeeze his little head through.

Today, my mom was joking with me and looked towards Tahoe's cage and goes 'Emily I think Tahoe is missing, I don't see him.' Then she really started looking for him... and couldn't find him. He was wedged in the bottom left hand corner of the cage- head OUT of the cage. Where you put the grate in the cage, there is a gap so you can put the grate in easy. A gap above the grate, so small I can put my finger, and thats it. Tahoe was apparently digging around in the bottom of his cage, and got his head through that gap and was stuck.

We had to bend the grate to get him out. I am praising my lucky stars that our cats don't care about the birds... they could have given him a heart attack. When we found him, poor baby was almost strangling himself trying to get free.

Needless to say, we went out and bought him a new cage ASAP.

Just a warning for all plet owners. Be careful!

Wow, Emily, what a close call indeed! I'm glad that you and your mom were there to free him. I'm glad he's ok!

Nothing too fancy, and a bit smaller then he was in- but he actually seems more secure in his smaller cage and there are absolutely NO holes for him to stick his head through!!!

Still a nice little set up for him - and safe! I can't imagine how scary it must have been to first see him stuck like that!

Holy Mack! Who'd have thought he'd do that!
Kind of reminds me of my Godfather's kid - had to get the Fire Dept over, to get his head out of the metal railing. How & why?

Nice smaller cage - way too bad about the bigger cage.
I'm looking around for a nice big cage too for the 2 Budgies - but I'm really uncertain - i was looking at a similar cage to the big one you have tho.........Oh nuts!

- wouldn't a bottom grate have helped????

Close call, for sure! Glad to hear that Tahoe's ok. There's just so many ways for the little fellers to get into trouble. I've noticed that sometimes there are spots on cages where gaps end up being wider than the actual wire gap itself. Tausi's old cage had a gap under the door between the door frame and bottom frame that ended up being more like 3/4 inch, although the cage wire was 5/8 inch. The gap on top of the door was the same way. Not much of a difference, but if you're already pushing the gap size, it could be enough to cause a problem. I had considered relocating Quito into that cage, but 5/8 would be the upper end already for her size, and 3/4 is definitely out of the question.
