I just saw this Sarah, how scary! I'm glad that he's doing better now. Occasionally I give my guys a little whole wheat toast crust. I think I'll give it to them untoasted from now on.

I just read this and am glad to read Winston is doing better. It is such a worry when they aren't themselves.

A little bit of slippery elm is wonderful to keep on the side, so you may want to purchase an ounce of it from Jeans Greens or something. I have only seen it in stores that have those bins of herbs in bulk. It's also used in cough drops and throat remedies.

I will purchase some. There were dried herbs in bulk but most had funky names and I didn't see any Slippery Elm.

..... so i go away for a few days ......

I really enjoyed the thread & learned quite a bit - Thanks Winston & Poor Sarah! - all weirded out over the little piggies. I swear Laker eats all the time. Maybe Winston won't wolf his food next time???

We serve flat whole breads clipped to the cage walls & they fight over them even tho they have 2 to choose from. Now i'll be more cautious about leaving them unsupervised with this kind of food.

What next!?

Yep slippery elm is what our "non-western med" people use on our megaesophagus list. It seems to work on the "herbal" dogs and since birds are "herbal" I bet it would help them. Meaning their bodies haven't been ravaged by things like Nexium etc....it's a substitute for Carafate.

Then again, hopefully Winston won't gulp his food again and it's a one time fluke!

ETA: ha ha I just noticed homebird said the same thing about wolfing food!

Well, just the chamomille and honey will be OK, he is eating and pooping and moving and vocalizing so I think it was just the dry toast kind of scratching his throat and/or his crop a bit but nothing major, thank goodness. Great news!
