Default any ideas? Cricket......

is acting a little odd. Started last night when I put him to bed. He was fussing a lot. He would rest when Kelly held him. Even sleep a bit. He went to sleep after we went to bed too. I gave him his last meds last night as well. Given with a syringe that has a very short tip and it gets dropped in his beak.
This morning he is sitting around all poofy. Not his usual get into everything self. Kelly feels pin feathers on his neck but I thought he was too young to do any molting. He is perching ok and seems to be eating normal. Even tho I did exactly the same thing last night I did every time I gave him his meds, I'm just sure I did something wrong.

My thoughts, before I read that Kelly felt pin feathers, was that maybe it has something to do with a molt - Jerry always sleeps a little more when molting. Other than that, I wouldn't know what else it might be. How old is he now?

it seems like the same as last year with Zoey when she molted real heavy. I guess it could be just new feathers? I'm watching eat now and he isn't lacking any gusto in that neighborhood.

3 months does sound young to be molting (but maybe it's a plet thing?), but then again there are pins..

Good that he's eating well though!

Budgies can molt at 3 months so maybe a plet can too.

if not a molt its a "new feather" kind of thing. He just looks tired and worn out all poofed up. He is out playing on his cage now.

well he is sitting on my shoulder alternating between chewing the collar of my shirt, chewing my neck, and peacefully grinding his beak. If he looks like he is going down hill at all, which I doubt he will as he is starting to be his ornery self, hard to type with a Parrotlet chewing your neck!!! Kelly and Nathanial both have the vets number if needed.

that's what i was thinking... new feathers... 3mths seems awfully young for a molt (though i don't have much experiences with plets) but it could be that there are still feathers coming in which are bothering him (valo had feathers coming in up to about 4-5mths w/o molting)

Jim, other than illness, one reason for sitting around like that is being tired (less than 12 hours sleep). If you're putting him "to bed" and he's "fussing" I'm assuming you mean from light to "dark" or semi dark? Try dimming your lights slowly for 15-30 minutes with him in his sleeping spot.

Truthfully, he shouldn't be sleeping at ALL when he's awake. If he's sleeping in the evening especially grinding his beak that means it's past his bed time. No offense LOL, I know it's fun having them out.

The pinfeathers are from protein. Including sprouts or grains if you're giving quinoa for example. And seed. And nuts. His juvie molt would be around 5 months and be the down and contour. Not a ton on the head or face. But I give extra protein during a true molt and sometimes it causes a few pinfeathers.

High protein will tend to make them agitated, too but combined with being tired you may not be seeing that full on.

It's hard to say ....since the quietness and poofyness resembles being sick so try extending his sleep time tonight. Mine definitely poof up when they rest at 11 am and before bed. And when they are tired. Which is rare and usually me messing up the schedule.

His wings will start regrowing IME after 3 months old and unless you clip will be all the way in around 6-7 months old depending on breakage. I'd give the extra protein then for about 4 days until the blood receeds. Since feathers are all protein it helps. A BIT not a ton LOL.
