#21 | | | Re: Advice Please, Ollie's foot OK, I looked up the cream neosporin, and found this: Quote: |
Each gram contains 10,000 units of polymyxin B, 3.5 mg of neomycin, and 0.25 mg of gramicidin. Nonmedicinal ingredients: emulsifying wax, methylparaben, mineral oil, poloxamer, propylene glycol, and white petrolatum.

I tend to very conservative regarding products that say to use with medical advice and also that children under two should not use it: "Children: For newborns and infants, absorption by immature skin may be enhanced. Children who use this medication may be at risk of increased blood levels and side effects", along with other possible side effects. So I personally would, for a little skin cut, use my olive oil - garlic preparation. I also use, for myself and my family, two products from Turtle Island. One is Calendula Skin Dressing for milder conditions, and the other is Shotgun Skin Dressing, a stronger, herbal 'antibiotic' (contains goldenseal and chaparral) salve. The calendula is made in a base of almond and olive oil, beeswax and vitamin e oil, and the other the same except it substitutes safflower for olive oil. I love these products and have used the calendula salve on the birds in the past.
I completely respect the official opinion that neosporin cream is safe, only I wouldn't use it unless I felt it was really warranted. It's my own personal bias, where I tend to use herbal products before ramping up to allopathic medical products. I learned my approach, interestingly enough, from my grandfather, who was an M.D., general practitioner and surgeon. He always said, 'save the big guns for last', regarding antibiotics, claiming that they work better when not overused. He was the one who mashed garlic in warm olive oil for my ear infections when I was a child. If that didn't work, then he would prescribe antibiotics. |

Ollie's foot is doing much better now that I have the humidifier...so are my cracked hands! | Glad to hear that Ollie's foot is doing better! Furnaces running seem to really dry the air our. We need to get our humidifier out as well. Emerald our Eclectus tends to itch his neck a lot when it gets dry!
We bought some red palm oil a while ago, but never used it! |
