Default Sweets

Before I begin
- note to all: I am only setting up a discussion & not offering any insights of my own.

Most of you wouldn't give your birds candy.

We do give them sweets tho in the form of starches and fruit/veggie sugars.

A friend of mine told me a very interesting story yesterday.
She has a Senegal - Piercy. At one time I was going to take her but my family scotched that idea. She's a great bird - about 16 years old and very healthy. She is very good with people but she kind of bullies my friend - gets crabby if she's going out or isn't paying attention. My friend is frail and her health is too - she said to me 2 weeks ago that she thought she was going to have to give Piercy up. Piercy was being aggressive - bit her pretty hard on the arm. She just wasn't up to this on top of feeling poorly.

It turns out my friend likes bananas. She lets Piercy share. 2 weeks ago she ran out & kept forgetting them when she shopped. Then she realized Piercy was not being aggressive & was once again a sweetie.

Good old Sugar High - tensions and hyper on full throttle.
... is it an allergy?

Funny isn't it, another bird will be OK and unaffected by the same food.....just goes to prove they are as individual as we all are.

Don't be too hard on sugar lol. Sugar actually isn't the culprit for hyper-ness, it's usually additives or colourings etc. Having said that, too much sugar can make your blood sugar levels decrease which makes you irritable, so it could have been that which was causing the aggressive behaviour. Do you know how much banana she was eating?

No - I don't - but it was a regular thing.

Her owner is pretty careful with her diet - but you never know.
Now Piercy is over 15 she's a pretty mellow bird from my personal experience with her. This is Piery's 3rd home [at least] & she's been with my friend about 10 years or more.

I think my friend was having glucose problems too & they've said she's borderline Diabetic.

Well, I don't know if it was the sugar in the bananas that did it because they actually have a low glicemic index. That's why diabetic people can eat them.
