Default Seed Mix Questions

I thought a thread like this might be helpful for those trying to decide what seed mix to feed. Please join and post a review of what kind(s) you feed and why. Thanks!

For those of you that feed a Seed, Veggie, Fruit & Nut Mix;

What kind do you feed?

Is it a clean mix?

Is it Vitamin fortified or enriched?

Does is contain pellets, granules or biscuits?

Why do you like it?

What other mixes have you tried?

Why did you switch?

This whole seed thing has me sooooo confused . I use Lafeber's, the Premium daily diet, and I use their nutri berry's mixed in with it. Blondie and Dagwood rarely touch their pelleted food, while Pickles and Peek-a-Boo gobble theirs all up. But mostly I feed all of them plenty of fresh veggies, fruits, and bean, veggie, pasta, rice mixture. I use to use Zupreem, but not fond on the coloring being added. Any who that's my story.

I bought the Ultimate Blend a few times which had dried fruits and veggies which mine would eat some of and toss the rest. The pieces were too big for them though even in the "small blend" and they wouldn't touch the pellets. That didn't have seeds though so I had to add some and then add pellets they would eat, so I quit buying it....

Now I feed mine Volkmans Parakeet mixed with Goldenfeast Petite Legume and natural Zupreem Cockatiel pellets.

What kind do you feed? I use several kinds of dry mixes, but generally I feed the largest portion of Golden Feast Seed Mixes. The birds really like the GoldenFeast Caribbean’Fornia. While not organic it claims that it has no added chemicals and the fruits are sulfur free. It’s a good looking mix even if the fruits are not that bright orange color that you see with fruits that have been treated with sulfur.

Is it a clean mix? The GF mixes are all very clean, no dust or debris at all. I have used many of the GoldenFeast Blends and have been pleased with them. The only exception was the California Blend II, IMO it had way too much Parsley in it, which clung to everything in the mix.

This a pretty neat chart that GoldenFeast has. It shows each of their blends listed by who they feed and what is unique about that blend; Gourmet Blends

Is it Vitamin fortified or enriched? Not the mixes I use. I don't know if their other mixes are or not.

Does is contain pellets, granules or biscuits? Not the mixes I use.

Why do you like it? I am comfortable using GF because it has human grade ingredients. I feel much more comfortable with human grade standards that pet grade standards.

What other mixes have you tried? Parrots on the Porch, Avian Naturals, Volkman, Higgins, Hagen, Abba 1500 just to name a few.

Why did you switch? I still use Parrots on the Porch, Avian Naturals & Volkman. IMO the Parrots On The Porch and Avian Naturals mixes are excellent. The Volkman can be a little dusty from time to time. Abba 1500 has sprayed on vitamins which makes the peanuts, sunflower seeds and fruits in the mix a blue/green color. Hagen has the most delicious smell to it, I think it’s because of the Orange Oil in their mixes.

What kind do you feed?
Currently, the Budgies are on Volkman Parakeet Premium and Lulu is on Volkman Cockatiel No Sun.

Is it a clean mix?
Honestly, the Volkman seeds are not as clean as I was hoping - there is some dust and debris. After I finish their current bags, I will be switching brands.

Is it Vitamin fortified or enriched?
I don't think so.

Does is contain pellets, granules or biscuits?

No. But I feed Lafeber's Nutriberries and Avicakes, which do contain pellets. I've been extremely happy with the Lafeber products and will continue to use them in addition to a seed mix.

What other mixes have you tried? And why have you switched?
Jerry used to be on Kaytee Fusion when he first came home - that had colored pellets and that is the main reason I switched him off of that, I don't want to feed foods with artificial coloring.

I then switched Jerry to Kaytee Parakeet Supreme Fortified. That seed mix was VERY clean, but then I learned that Fortified doesn't help since they hull their seeds anyways.

Lulu used to be on Kaytee Forti-Diet Cockatiel w/Safflower. Again, that was a very clean mix, and I wanted to switch due to the reason above, that Fortified doesn't do much.

Along with clean seeds and no artificial dyes, I also look for mixes with no sunflower seeds.

What kind do you feed? Ivy gets the "Large Parrot Blend" from Parrots on the Porch as well as the "Goliath's Just Say NO Macaw Mix" from Avian Naturals. Artemis currently gets the "Ultimate Small Bird Blend" from Bird Paradise, but I will be switching him to the "Small Parrot Blend" from Parrots on the Porch in my next order from them.

Is it a clean mix?
Ivy's is incredibly clean, though I toss the peanuts and what little sulfated fruits are in the Avian Naturals. Artemis' is a little dusty, but it's also very tiny.

Is it Vitamin fortified or enriched?
Not that I am aware of

Does is contain pellets, granules or biscuits? Artemis' has some uncolored pellets.

Why do you like it? Ivy's because it is completely organic, no added anything. The Porch mix I can rehydrate into a warm breakfast for her. Both mixes smell great with a good variety. She loves them! Artemis' I like because it's small enough for him to eat, and has a good variety. He is super picky so it's hard to get him to eat new things.

What other mixes have you tried? I bought some horrible "Carnival" mix from Petsmart for Ivy, but promptly tossed it all after reading the ingredients and seeing to poor quality. I was in a panic when I bought it because Ivy was coming home in a few days. Other than that, I haven't tried anything else! It's very hard to find organic. I mostly likely will make my own mixes eventually.

Why did you switch?

"carnival" was the brand name, and not a good brand at all IMO. ivy's mixes are fruits/nuts/veggies/grains, no seeds except a few sunflowers here and there.

What kind do you feed? I feed both budgies and Linnie a mix that is called Denise's Mix that consists of White millet, soft wheat, canary seed, buckwheat, hemp, safflower seed, red millet, finch millet, milo, med. sunflower chips, patty rice, Japanese millet, Siberian millet.

Is it a clean mix? It appears to be very clean.

Is it Vitamin fortified or enriched? I don't think so but am not sure.

Does is contain pellets, granules or biscuits? No but I feed the budgies Lafebers pellets and the linnie Totally Organic pellets. When the Totally Orgainc are gone I am going to try the linnie on the Lafebers like the budgies.

Why do you like it? Little waste

What other mixes have you tried? I used a Kaytee blend for budgies and linnie.

Why did you switch? Some things I read made me think this might not be the best.
