I have always purchased roasted in-shell peanuts but ended up with some Organic-Raw In-Shell Peanuts that I purchased from Sun Organics.

I'm aware that some do not feed peanuts because of Asper worries, that aside; are Raw (In-Shell) Peanuts safe?

Peanuts are somewhat dangerous as they get mold inside, you need to crack and peep inside if it is ok. I am very careful with peanuts although my birds and truly love them they lucky if they get. My birds love to open them but mostly I give them unshelled because of the time it takes to look in them. If I find one bad I feed them all to the chickens because my theory is rather not risk it because there will be more than one bad in the batch.

Hi Karen! I checked my books and the Grey Play Round Table said that roasting helped to inhibit the mold that makes peanuts risky, but be careful and check for mold first. Also be sure to buy from a reputable dealer. Another book said that they all are bad. It said that raw peanuts are in alot of wild bird seed. Who knows. I give Ruby some that I order from Online nuts. com. They are just so fresh. They are roasted though and I look at each one. Not much help, I know.

I feed raw unshelled and have never had a problem. I do look and taste them myself because I like to make sure they fresh and not stale. Once i did get some kind of worm hatch out, I am not sure what the final moth/ beetle would have been but, that can happen to any kind of seed or nut. Chickens enjoy a bit of live worms so was not a problem.

Kady loves peanuts and gets one at bedtime. The ones I bought from Sun Organics are the best quality I have ever seen. I only buy human grade and am very careful to check them out. I meant to buy roasted, but must have mis-read my order and bought raw. I just tasted them and I don't care for them. I just know Mr. Fuss Budget is not going to like them, so they are going to go to the wild birds and squirrels.

I only give mine human-grade roasted and because they only get one each a day, even a small 2 lb bag lasts a long time so I would not risk getting raw. Plus, I don't like them and I always eat a few with them when I give them dinner.
