Re: Poop for dinner? Hi Denise
Thank you for asking. I think it's not as prevelant as it was. I've always made sure she has plenty of food and I've taken to wadding up newspaper to put on the grate of her cage. I do that with my other birds as part of the hygiene part of their cages, but she just wanted to tear it up. The wadded up paper creates crevices and spaces where she might poop, but it's either not visible for her to eat because it's landed in the crevice, and/or the space is too 'deep' for her to bother trying to find it to eat. I actually think this has done the best with curtailing this habit believe it or not. Being housed with 21 other birds, I think she probably didn't get a lot of food, certainly not nutritious, filling food, and I think she was just hungry and that was the only way she could get some food (as sad as that is).
I'm hanging and having more 'chewable' toys for her and I believe she's 'busier' now, as she learns how to play with them.
My hope is that as she develops more social skills and settles in a bit more, she'll forget about doing that and I'll feel better. My avain vet said it's not a horrible thing for birds to do, and for the most part won't hurt them, but I just want to move her attention elsewhere. ack
Thanks!
