Yeah, I'd like to know too. Especially the NJ one.

OP, ask your friend to contact Gigi Graciette at Fox 11 and Channel 13. She's an animal lover and might do a piece on it. I know her from another board.

I just came back from my local Petsmart, and spoke to a girl there who is in charge of the Birds. I had called her a bit ago (I posted about it somewhere) and talked to her about all this. She had told me at the time that they had recieved an e mail about it, and were taking the appropriate action to make sure they were OK, although Colorado stores weren't affected, it was in Calif.

Today she said they have a handle on it and they are being very careful, and are still getting e mail follow-ups from corporate. The problem never hit Colorado, but was a big deal in Calif. I mentioned that NJ was also affected, and she agreed that she had heard that as well.

That's all I know though, and only about Colorado.

I also posted a while ago about getting a reply from the corporate office...a friend in a FL store (mgmt) also says things are under control. All birds are being quarantined and new shipments of lovebirds are temporarally (at least) suspended....The corporate response was prompt, there was no denial or hiding...

It is safe to trust a pet shop when there is no denial or hiding, at least you know where you stand.

It is nice to see Petsmart has taken responsibility and has initiated an action plan to get the PBFD under control!

I heard 6 months. The scary thing is, when a store doesnt have proper ventialtion, they can scrub walls all day, and the dust is still in the place. Im now tightly buttoning up my lip!

Sorry to hear of your loss! Maybe someone here can shed some light on how long the virus survives. I will be talking to one of my avian vets tomorrow and will ask the question.

Are you thinking of getting another bird?

Can I suggest that we all contact our avian vets and ask them the proper procedures for disinfecting and precautions to take, no matter which pet store it is? After all, our birds are relying on us as individual pet owners for their safety. It starts first with us being responsible pet owners.
