Default PBFD and Me (a story of treatment)

A while back I had an outbreak of PBFD in my store/home. I never knew where it came from for sure.

I wanted to talk about the treatment of PBFD. Please do not bring any arguments from other threads into this one. this is for discussion and treatment only.

Two lovebirds survived PBFD in my home. Put them into quarentine. Both tested positive, only one became symptomatic.

These were the steps I took:

1. Testing. I tested and tested again.
2. After coming back with some positive tests, I looked at enviroment. How could I better the enviroment to help fight off disease? I put lights (full spectrum) on a timer. I looked at diet, and improved that. No more seed diets, these guys got the full gamut of fresh nutrition.

3. Retest. After (much to my surprise) the orange faced lovebird started re-growing feathers, I waited a few more weeks and re-tested. NEGATIVE. So I retested AGAIN, negative. I retested a few more times over the following weeks and they all came back negative.

The first two photos are of the symptomatic lovebird. You can see the major feather loss (this bird was 3 months old in this photo) and distortion of the upper beak. Feather loss around the eyes is sometimes the first symptom.

I will post a photo of the orange faced with perfect feathers tomorrow sometime. That photo is on my lap top at work.

Dayna
Thanks for sharing your story. It does give a positive outlook for a devastating disease.

Hey Dayna,

I think it was you who mentioned an Ozone machine. I haven't really gotten a chance to research on my own exactly how one works, or how a person would find one if they needed it. Is this the sort of device a person could use as a preventative measure a few times each year. Or are they strictly by prescription only?

Thanks, Dayna!

This may be difficult, and no need to answer if you choose not to, but did any of your other birds come down with it?

Kathie, I was so scared that my cockatoo Ginger would come down with it. I moved her into my bedroom. She had been sharing a room with the infected birds! Scott Ford told me that my south american birds (macaw, amazons and conures) were not really at risk.

I was so scared and tested her like a million times, but thankfully to this date she has never had one positive test.

Lance,

You can buy an ozone machine online. We use it a few times per year to kill any lingering bacteria and viruses in our home and business. Make sure you get an actual "ozone" maker. Not an ionizer or air filter. An ozone maker only makes the gas ozone. It does nothing else (other than most have a fan to blow the ozone around). They are pretty expensive (good models can run over $1,000 but most are under $600).

This is the one we have:

AlpineAirProducts

Just remember that ozone levels above 0.04 PPM are a health hazard (it kills stuff like bacteria). We used toxic levels to kill stuff and it worked. You just can't have anything living in the room while it is running, and you must air the room out afterword.

Do you know why this is? I've never heard this before.
