Default Parrot Biscuits

Both my Macaws just love the (Natural) Zupreem Parrot Crunch Biscuits. I am only able to offer 1 or 2 a day because they have a higher protein level.

They must like the size of them because they will head for this biscuit before they will pick up a pellet.

Are there any biscuits out there that have the relatively the same ingredients and protein levels as pellets?

Here's an example of pellets vs. biscuit. I don't understand the high protein level in the biscuits.

My two eat the Tropican High Performance Biscuits all the time Karen. In fact I buy about 3 different Tropican pellets and mix them together. Funny enough mine will usually eat the smaller ones first. But they do like the biscuits too. The like to grab one outta their bowl, and take it someplace else and munch on it. They are easy for the fids to hold in their feet.

Kris, do you feel that 22% Protein level is high?

I must admit I don't know what is considered too high, or just right. I've been basing my concern on a normal Protein % range from pellets. Harrison's Hi-Po which is recommended for GreenWings is 18%.

I can't find any article that pins down the exact recommendation for protein percent levels. The only thing I could find was a recommendation for Hyacinth Macaws, which should be fed a lower protein diet, and the article stated they would not feed anything over 18% Protein to a Hy.

So is it alright or needed for the other Macaws to have a higher amount?

Honestly Karen, I don't know the exact amounts. My birds eat a lot of fresh foods, and actually only consume about 3 tbsp of pellets a day...if that. Pellets last them a long time. Maple has been eating them since the day we got her, and she's in great shape. Like I said before as well....I find they eat less of those compared to what they eat of the regular pellets. And it's usually a large bag of small pellets with a small bag of biscuits mixed in..if that makes sense. I'll see if I can come up with some numbers, but the best I can say right now is that it has been working well for Maple and Harley so far.

Karen I just searched online and all my books I have here at home and everything just generalizes that they need protein but I can't find anything with an amount either. Hmmmm.

Mine don't, so I have to rely on pellets and biscuits or supplements to get the vitamins and minerals in. Being that they prefer the biscuits over pellets, I wish someone had a suitable biscuit that I felt comfortable with. One good enough that I could fore-go pellets and let them eat the biscuits instead.

Thanks for looking Kris! I appreciate it. We'll find something someday. I even had my AV call Zupreem, thinking they would know the reasoning behind the higher protein levels in their biscuits, but she didn't get much of answer. That's why she told me to limit them to two a day.
