Default Mosquito's & Summer

I forgot to mention this before, but when I took Pita in for his well check, my vet mentioned that birds are very susceptible to mosquito's.

He said that they carry lots of diseases that birds can easily catch.

So be carefull this summer, when your fids are outside.....watch for those skeeto's!

I've also been told about this from my avian vet and it is for this reason that I do not take my fids outside......I live in the country and this year the mosquitos have been terrible! The closest they get to "nature" is from my screened deck!

As I understand it, West Nile Virus is a very real danger. Here in Maine (mostly more southerly than I am) the Crow, Robin and Blue Jay populations are being described as decimated.

Oh no, Nate, that's terrible! Lived in Bar Harbor for several years while hubby's ship was in the Bath Iron Works. Absolutely beautiful area!

I have kept and currently keep parrots outside for the last 15 yrs. (yr. round) with no known problems from skeeters. Only proven problem I did have was with canaries which are very susceptible to Avian/Canary Pox carried by skeeters. Larger birds and finches seem to be immune to Pox - around here anyway.

Also remember, a mosquito can easily come thru your door from outside upon you or a family member entering/leaving. I would not get overly worked up about remote possibilities (do what you feel is best for your birds however). JMO...

My local newspaper recently printed an article saying that West Nile was reducing wild bird populations all over the country, with birds like crows, robins and blue jays being particularly susceptible. I'm glad I live in Arizona where mosquitoes are rare.

I have already been worried about Mosquito's and with the west nile virus. Here in Illinois there have been numerous wild birds found dead that tested positive for west nile virus. And as ~J~ mentioned they can easily get in through screen doors or on people, we can spray ourselves and kids, but not much we can do for our fids.

I will be trying to be super careful this summer.

Sheeze, you & others better quit scaring me Angela (yikes) - there is no way I could ever bring all my birds inside. Not sure if I should pray or try to start re-homing most all my flock to people who will keep them inside themselves. Darn skeeters!!!!!
