The method that has worked for me has been to give meds in hand feeding formula. The older suns like to get a share of formula so for them it is easy. The breeding suns is not so easy as they have to be toweled and it causes stress all round. Mostly deworming is all they get. The budgies whether pet or breeding I use the second method shown in the article. I am reluctant to towel a budgie as they are too easy to damage. If I ever get a large pet bird I will feed him mushy stuff by spoon to get him used to the idea, when one day meds may be needed. The syringe I have is less than 1/2cc and is marked off in very small quantities, it is not a normal syringe.

This is a great article with excellent pictures. Having had to adminster medicine by mouth to 2 different budgies, I know what a nightmare it can be. I wish I had seen this when my boys were sick.

I have had to medicate my GW or should I say my husband's GW.

It is funny how when they are sick you forget about the beak intimidation and just do it.

I usually stand Ru on my left leg. I put a towel under him and extend it up my body so when he shakes his head I do not get covered in the yucky stuff.
I make sure his back is against the table, this helps stabilize him. I then grasp his upper beak until he opens his mouth. I put the syringe tip into the left side of his mouth and inject a small amount. I use either a TB (1cc) or a 3cc syringe. I wait a few minutes to make sure he gets that amount down and start the routine over again.

Let me just say that Ru does not really like me. He will tolerate me but tries to bite me quite frequently. He tolerates me when I am medicating him and I think that is because he knows it is something that will help him. As he has seasonal allergies I have to give him childrens Benadryl from time to time. He doesn't like the taste but I think he knows it will help the runny nose and itchy feathers.

Once a week I use a few sterile 60 cc syringes and feed all of my guys a little bit of formula, they like it and think its a treat. And it helps me big time in the event that any of them get sick and I need to medicate. I had a macaw last year that had to be given meds for an immune def. disorder from not receiving the correct care from the store he was purchased from, so he took his meds willingly and thought he was getting a treat when he was being medicated. And when I medicated him he bobbed along, and I didnt have to mix any formula with the meds. So this method has worked wonders for me : )

Ollie plays with syringes as foot toys. Every once in awhile I'll put some real fruit juice or Gerber baby food in it and give it to her orally. She actually loves it!

Great idea, Camille. That is playtime should happen prior to the need to administer the medication. The plastic syringes are inexpensive toys too.

The only time I have had to medicate any of my birds, I had to administer baytril. Jello came to me from the petshop with a throat infection -- the AV said probably due to everyone in the store kissing her on the beak. Anyway, he told me to spread peanut butter on a cracker, spread the dose of baytril on top of the peanut butter and then put another cracker on top.

Just a heads up, Baytril will do more harm then good if not introduced quickly and always keep Baytril in the frig out of the sun light.
I inject here, a pinch of the back of the neck, insert the needle and walla...done...
Of coarse I remove all air from the syringe...
My wife follows the procedure that was posted above concerning our exotics and yes sometimes we do disagree on how these meds should be applied, the less stress...the better for both bird & human...
Birds are different, some take there meds nicely, others fight...I just feel its best to inject meds and be done with it, this lessons the stress factor.
Also it depends on the meds as to how they should be offered.
Thank you for providing the link, I found it to be very helpful.

One great way to medicate your birds,is to get them use to eating some sponge cake, and when you need to medicate your bird put the meds in the cake as it obsorbs it real good ,they eat the cake and medicated at the same time.
