Default Mango question

Are the pits of mangos ok to give to the birds? I've read somewhere how some pits are toxic. Are these?

Lara .... I should have checked into that myself before giving many of mine left-over Mango still on the pit. They seemed to not only like the fruit but enjoyed the pit - therefore must not be toxic as they are all still well, been doing it for years btw.

Lara I don't know for sure. I've never given mine the pit. All I found regarding Mango was:

Mango - The fruit is safe and very good for birds. Large quantities of the skin may be toxic and should, therefore, be avoided.

Thanks for that info. Karen and btw Lara, I have never given any skin to any of my birds nor do I give any of my birds fruit that any human's mouth has been on - I cut the fruit off the seed with a knife and use either gloved hands or well washed hands (with antibacterial soap etc.) when handling fruit and pits.

For me it is easy, as I only like my Mangos firm - as I do my melons, etc....

I take a paper towel and hold the firm Mango in that while slicing off part of the skin lengthwise. I rotate Mango slowly as I continue same. Ya may need to use another paper towel before finished. My hands never touch the flesh.

For those that like soft or more ripe than I do, I'm all ears as how they do that in an unmessy fashion?

I have the darndest time getting the Mango peeled off the pit. By the time I'm done it's usually just right for the garbage!

That's part of the reason why I asked. I'll do my best and then just throw the rest in a dish and serve.
