Any tips on getting her out of the cage? She will let me pet her and kiss her while she is in the cage but if I open the door she goes all the way to the back of the cage and starts hissing. The pic I have posted was taken the day we moved her in. I would love to bring her out and hold her.

I'll have to leave this one for some of the more experienced members to answer. My B&G is only 8 months old and this is his first home so I haven't had any experience with this issue. I'm sure patience and talking sweet to her will go a long way in earning her trust.

Be patient. Start with having sweet talk through the open door. Dont try to force her out. Offer her a special treat like an almond, or a toy she likes. Once she knows she can safely step up for you, you should be fine, but this could take a while.

Leigh is correct, I would like to add that you need to offer an arm rather than a hand, also make sure your arm is firm maybe resting on the cage door. You bird will test with the beak to make sure your arm is strong enough to bear her weight, be ready for this, it is not a bite. Birds step up beak first when learning. If in her previous home she scared people this can be the reason for reluctance now.

Hi, welcome to PC. In my opinion, leaving her to become comfortable with her surroundings is very important. Begin to build trust as it appears you are through the bars. Birds are very sensitive creatures, and because they are so perceptive, their emotions often depend upon whether or not they see their environment as positive. Keep it upbeat and fun. When she does something good, give a reward and if she does something undesirable, ignore it. Never punish her. Building trust is so very important. Offer your wrist or forearm for her to step up when you are relaxed and have plenty of time. Remain positive even if she doesn’t come out and just quietly walk away and try again at another time.

Have you named her yet?
