I have a special needs Tiel that is 3 years old this year. He was a "poor doer" when I got him as a weaned baby and also has scoliosis. Anyway, I have always had to supplement him with hand feeding. He does not get it every day, but it probably wouldn't hurt since he does not eat enough to keep his weight on him - he has always been light.

I was reading the thread about the Severe Cosmo on BB and it was mentioned in there about going to Harrisons Juvenile handfeeding as being on HF can cause liver or some type of problems.

Does anyone know how true this is?

I would love any advise you can give on thise matter.

When Shadow does get fed, he only receives 5- 6 ccc max.

Oops sorry it was another Board where the vet said it was not good for them.(Still the same bird though) Still interested to know though - if there are any health concerns to worry about using the handfeeding so long and if there is one that is recommended for "long tem" use. he is presently on Kaytee HF and is only fed one time a day.

Why don't you like Harrisons?

seen too many birds get sick after eating harrisons that do good on other brands.

I have a good friend that is a cockatiel breeder. She uses Roudybush pellets plus seed mix, but always uses Kaytee Exact for handfeeding. She says the birds just do better on it. I have to agree. I have always used Kaytee Exact and never had any problems whether it was with a baby or an adult that needed supplementing.

OK, Thanks ya'll. I use the KT plus he has Keet seed, Zupreem, oat groats and small bird fruit and veggie. He just really doesn't eat much of it.
Guess I will continue the KT - I like it also just worried about any possible side effects if any from feeding so long.

Nope it wont hurt your bird at all.

I have birds in their 30's and 40's that i still handfeed from time to time and a 25 year old U2 that insists on it and i have never had even a small problem with it.

Not sure at the moment but wasn't Harrison's the one with a lot of Psyillium in it? If so, I stopped using it because of that reason, I also didn't like the way it mixed up with water. All my birds do well on Kaytee for Baby Birds. I don't use the one for Baby MaCaws as too much fat in it for other type babies.

I used Harrisons on my caique when he got sick- I did not like how quickly it thickened up in comparison to the Kaytee I used on my amazon. It thickened up super quickly, and as it cooled down it got even thicker.
