Default Flighted Parrots

I found this article totally intriguing. There are some strong statements in the article, but even though I didn't agree with all of them it was a good read.

Flighted Parrots
by Steve Hartman / The Parrot University

Can a parrot, designed by nature for millions of years, be truly mentally and physically healthy without flight?

At Hartman Aviary, we have spent 20 years researching what makes a parrot "a parrot".

Very good. I love letting Chipper fly. It is common sence that birds need to fly. Great article!

I know there will be skeptics who will point out that the author stands to profit financially from promoting non-clipping of parrots, but as one who started out clipping my birds and now not clipping any for more than a year, I can honestly say the difference in them is remarkable -- and this article tells me why. Thank you for the link, Karen. It serves to further support my decision to allow my birds full-flight.

I can honestly say I saw a difference too when I let Buddy's wings grow back. And then he flew away this summer. I was lucky to get him back. I had to clip him again. I figured the benefits of real outside air and sunshine outweighed him having flight. Ill tell the story in another thread another time.

This is my pain here. The benifits of both are so overwhelming and I lack the money for an outdoor flight. I also do not trust my neighbor hood either with Bella's saftey in those regards. Real sunshine is better than the UVA light in her cage. I still would worry about the harness slipping from my hands or something along those lines.

Just, her mind seems sooo much sharper. Her talking has taken off along with her flying as has some other abilities she's showing at this age. The time for ceiling fans are off for the winter and I will see how things go come spring when she'll get to benifit from the sunshine again.

I truely wish Libbys previous owner would never have clipped her. Her flights have all been in for over five years now but after almost 20 years, she has no idea she could try to fly.

Thank you Karen for that very informative article, I used to clip all my birds just because when I worked at BP it was the norm...For the past I would say about 8 months I have been letting my babies flights grow in. Although some of my rehomes/rescues that came to me that were already flighted, I have never clipped. My CAG Baby is a phenominal flier she can take the turns and curves around door ways and hasnt hit any walls, her favorite place to land is on the Bf's flat screen monitor for his computer..And if she isnt removed she will try to chew through it lol...I am with susan though I have my very first bird my amazon Harpo who was always clipped by his previous owners and after all these years after his flights have grown back he still has no clue he can fly and will fall from his play stand before flying from it...

My budgie Sugar came to me clipped. He was a quiet, depressed guy. I got him a friend and let his wings grow out. He is so much more active. It took him a while but now he is a happy bird that flies like a champ. I'm not against clipping wings but for me fully flighted is the way I like to go.
