yes he has already gone to the vet, he went on Monday and they found an infection... took a sample and sent it off to the lab. (not to clear on the exact details, since i wasn't at the vet with my mom) the dr. called my mom last night and left a message for her to come to his office this morning because they found two strands of bacteria infections and she needs to pick up medication for him.

when she got there this morning, he told her that he had e. coli and put him on antibiotics and wants to see him again when he is done with the medication.

And, yes, depending on the strain, the bird should be OK on its own or given antibiotics. My husband had an e.coli infection years ago and he had to take three different kinds of antibiotics for three whole months to get rid of it. Some strains are highly resistant to antibiotics.
he goes to work with my mom everyday... she owns a barbershop and he hangs out there all the time. never really thought about all the germs from other people touching his cage, him or treats that they give him. ugggg... this is just so scary!

Kate, just want you to know that I'm thinking of Cosmo and your mom tonite as well, and hoping he will be healthy again soon. So much to think about with diseases lately!

I have been doing more reading on Apple Cider Vinegar - the raw stuff. It has a lot of benefits for any bacterial infection both inside & out.

From all I've been looking into over the years - health care of human & pet - it boils down for me to 'staying healthy'. So preventative is very high on my list.

To have Cosmo with her maybe they need to think about creating a spot that is more protected. It would be a terrible shame if the bird lost its outings & all the activity it is involved in. Perhaps she can say he's been sick & they need to keep away. Maybe add some Apple Cider to his water & give the old cage & effects a going over. Maybe get new toys & new bowls. We all need to review & no one sees their own dirt - no one, not even the good ones.

All the best & I hope to hear good news soon.

Thanks Karen! The good thing is that Cosmo isn't really acting any different... he doesn't appear to show any signs of not feeling well. i know that they tend to hide their illness and by the time you notice it's too late, so im hoping that everything will be fine.
