Cleanliness and your Bird
During my years in the avian world I have learned cleanliness/Hygiene to be a major factor in keeping my birds healthy.
Perches and ropes, basically anywhere the bird perches must be kept clean, feces can be absorbed through the birds Talons and enter there blood stream.
Fresh water, Sometimes birds will discharge into there water, then drink from it, I can’t express this enough, Changing your birds water at least 2 times a day…or if you see Feces in the water is a must.
Wash the seed dish and water dish daily, I use bleach to clean with but there are other products on the market to assist in cleaning, Germs and bacteria will build up in these dishes and enter the food and water supply.
Change the bedding and or newspapers in the bottom of the cage daily, there are beddings on the market that can hurt your bird if digested, for this reason I use newspapers, the fumes from there feces can make the bird ill and also you.
The cage itself should be wiped down daily, your bird uses its beak to aid in climbing and in many other ways, for this reason, keeping the cage as clean as possible will help to keep your bird healthy.
Please remember, Birds will not let you know they are sick, they are (prey birds) allowing others to know they are ill subjects them to harm, the old saying, “only the strong survive” applies here.
You must know in advance what to look for, a happy healthy bird will frolic in there cage…be noisy, playing-activity, if your bird just sits there, this is a good sign that something is wrong.
Swaying, incoherent, puffy eyes, watering eyes, nasal discharge, all are signs of a un-healthy bird, please take your bird to a vet right away if you suspect there is something wrong, if there are no emergency vets in your area, please log onto Avairy.info and seek help fast, your birds life will depend on your awareness, and your ability to keep there cage and environment clean.
DON’T BE A BIRD JAILER, all birds need out of cage time to remain healthy, I recommend 2 hours per day, letting your bird out of his-her cage subjects them to harm, and having a bird safe home is a must.
Awareness is the key to your bird’s good health and for your good health also.
