Default Beak problem, advise needed.

On a serious side with Pi'ere he does have a terribly overgrown top beak and only half a bottom.

I have been watching his food intake, he is unable to eat a lot of the green stuff I give him. Sticking mainly to apple and toast with heaps of butter, sunflower seeds.

He will have to go to the vets and be looked at.
Here's where I need some advise. I am scared the trim will turn into the same situation I had with Peggy, it was awful.
Also how long should I wait before I take him?
He has been with me for a week.

You will probably have to take him for several sessions so they can do a tiny bit at a time..
They should use a dremal, not clip it.

Oh, my goodness, don't wait a second longer! This is an extreme situation and it needs to be taken care of right away. And, please, no butter! It's poison to psittacines, especially toos that are fruit eaters.

Oh dear! Poor Pie're! I would be scared of that too, especially after what you went through before. Wish I was able to go with you. I heard a girl on the news one night say "if it's gotta be did - it's gotta be did!" Mean old me laughed at her at the time - but there is alot of wisdom in that! haha! You can do this. Just a bit at a time.

Sue, do you have a good vet there that you trust? Hopefully you do and you can have them explain exactly how they will handle this.

I know he hasn't been with you long and you would like to have more time with him for bonding and trust before having this done. But I agree with the others, you'll have to start work on this ASAP so he can start eating a proper diet. You'll have plenty of time after he's feeling better and eating better to work on your relationship. They have very understanding forgiving hearts.

I took my Kady to the vet for surgery the day I brought him home and we have managed to build a very good trusting relationship despite the difficult beginning.

I had to take Billy to the vets with his split beak 3 weeks ago. He has no trust in me at all and i was really worried it would damage our relationship or lack of it further. had to force him into his old small cage for travelling. As it happened it did wonders for us, I was expecting him clinging to back of cage terrified during the journey but he sat on perch with 1 leg both ways and facing me, i talked nonsense to him for an hour in total with his undivided attention. We both enjoyed the trip the vet was really good with him and he was only traumatised going to and from car, he refused to go back in his big cage when we got home and was squawking in a nice way to anyone who would listen, this is from a guy who climbs to the back of the cage when anyone goes too close! Just take the bull by the horns and get him to vets, it upset me a lot more than him.

Tis ok, actually not butter but margarine. I just call it butter still.

So I better make an appointment for him, will give them a call tomorrow. Today is a public holiday here.

I hope it goes well.

I was wondering if they could put a prosthetic piece epoxied to the lower beak? [too bad it couldn't be part of his upper one but I know they can only take a small bit off at a time.] - just a thought - to help with his eating.

They should be able to grind it down over a few months time. A little each week.
