Default You can't save the world!

How many times have any of you heard, "You can't save every bird!"? I heard it when I was in Mexico, and went out and bought cuttlebone and toys for the poor little neglected budgies in a cage in my hotel. If it has been said to you, this is for you:

“One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed
a boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean.
Approaching the boy, he asked, ‘What are you doing?’
The youth replied, ‘Throwing starfish back into the ocean.
The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die.’
‘ Son,’ the man said, ‘don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish?
You can’t make a difference!’
After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish,
and threw it back into the surf. Then, smiling at the man, he said…‘I made a difference for that one.’”

So true, Michele. And I bet it made you feel much better that you at least tried to make a difference for those budgies. Thanks for sharing this!

I also try to educate owners of neglected birds like those two IRNs I saw in Cairo last year. I lectured the guy in my best Arabic about toys or at least tree branches, veggies and bigger cages. In reality, the guy probably didn't take my advice and most Egyptians struggle to make ends meet but I did try.

Me too, Tiki. With the budgies (I also had to do this in Spanish!) I asked them, "Can I buy some presents for your little birds? I have a bird at home and I miss her...I love birds"blah, blah blah, instead of, "What are you doing with these poor budgies!?" When I gave them the toys, I explained that they like to play and also like to chew things.

(I also found myself speaking Spanish to the budgies! I think it's kind of funny that I thought they wouldn't understand English! I had to think about that one....)
