Smile Wonderful evening PART II

I too, had a wonderful evening with my bird.
I didn't work yesterday, so I had some extra time here with her. I was able to click her onto the perch and carry her high around the house, even into her old room, and she did fine. It's funny cause her eyes widen, not pupils pining, just appear to get BIG and she is taking it all in like a kid on a fair ride. Then back to her cage for huge praises and a treat. She doesn't "want" to be on that perch, but she'll get on it for a click and a treat. We did that several times.
Even though she won't let me handle her except for scritching and chin rubbing yet, she'll sit on the perch next to the recliner and get some good time in. SHE preens MY hand. that's new and funny. she nibbles and licks and holds my fingers one by one in her beak. No bites, just learning my taste I guess. She won't step onto my hand, yet...but she will in time.
Then last nite the kids were folding clothes in the living room. (yea, I'm the bad daddy who makes the kids do work) and they started laughing. My ADD parrot had just fallen off the lower perch, they saw it, and landed by the folded underwear. I went in there, and she was walking amongst the towels, underwear, washclothes and stopping and nibbling on them all....that was funny. I sat down in the floor and she came over to me for some scritching, but wouldn't get on my hand. I don't press that issue. Then she went back home climbed onto her cage and she was done.
We've come a long long way in 3 months. The biggest help was moving her into our living room and teaching her with clicker training.
Sometimes I think I might not be as proud of her if she had came to me all tame and knew how to act and do tricks. She's worked hard to get where she is with me.
My next step is to get a play gym for the living room for her to spend time on with us, but put her back into her room otherwise. She will want to be in there with us and will therefore WANT to be on the perch to get there.
Long..but I'm feeling successful this am.

That sounds so great Mark! You've made such progress with her! What does Baby thinks of your kids? How old are they? Ollie is fascinated by younger kids- mostly under the age of 8ish or so.

Camille, my son turns 11 and my daughter is 14. Dood is actually hers. But regardless, both of the kids love the burdz. Both have a lot of interaction with Dood, as does my wife. He's hard not to love. haha. We have friends that come over to see Dood.
Baby..she's another story. Being a more formidable bird, she's a lil more intimdating that he is. The kids talk to her, echo whistling back and forth and give her treats. They've scritched her once or twice. It's helping with them seeing her relax a lil more with me. I feel like she'll be a good bird with visitors whenever I get her a lil more relaxed and trained.
Does Ollie interact with younger ones or just look at em? I'm starting to like a gray more and more....

Another option is to get an oblong folding table they have them at Kmart or Target and other stores. 4, 5, 6 feet by about 2-3 wide. You can put a play area on it so she doesn't have to just perch on the same thing when she's out there. Then the play stand is one destination and the play table is another. She can eat on the play area too it can hold her food and water, and with the people around her since they like it when people eat and they do too, like their flock.

Using various width "perches" like rope and wood. And even just the table itself being flat is good for variety on the feet. Even a big rock to sit on. Then when you want you just fold up the table and it's gone. I use a cheap plastic non slippery table cloth on my tables. Also cotton fabric cut to fit that I can wash real quick. And Walmart sells see through plastic in the fabric dept. But I don't let them chew it.

I'm a little wary of letting her get too close to them. I don't think she'd bite, but if the kids were to jump or scream, etc, etc....I just don't want to take the chance when they're not my kids! Here are a few pics of her with my 2 year old niece. You can see she's absolutely fascinated by her.
