Exclamation Why are parrots pet(s)...

for you? Some of us have dogs, cats, and other exotic pets, but why have you chosen a parrot(s) as your pet? They require alot of care and attention and can be abnoxious, often bite, and can be loud. Can you bragg about your parrot and and explain why you allow a bird to own you? Send a pic of that "wonderful" pet to explain your reasoning if you must! LOL

I'm so used to being "owned" by creatures of all sorts, that it just comes natural for me! LOL!

I love mine because they're wild and beautiful, and yet they CHOOSE to love me back. It's not like they HAVE to--they all have parrot friends with whom they share a bond, and yet they WANT to spend time with me. They will fly from wherever they're roosting to sit on my shoulder, preen my hair, "help" me on the computer, or "steal" my food--and then try to feed it to me. Unlike dogs and cats, parrots haven't been bred long enough to be truly domesticated, yet, and so their mindset isn't quite so dependent upon us. Unlike the average reptile, their emotions are easy to read. Like us, they have strong, intelligent minds that need sustenance as much as their bodies do. Unlike us, they can FLY. And yet, mine choose to fly to me, rather than away. I love sharing my life with creatures who are a challenge, a joy, and in many ways, equals. I believe our world is blessed by birds. When we can share our lives with them, our lives are enriched. I only hope they can say the same about sharing their lives with me.

Oops! Forgot to mention that you can click on that resized signature to see my birds, or visit them at Welcome to Flying Sheep Aviary , where there are dozens of photos of my Goons.

Jim--"no bite!".

Yeah, I thought so. My birds rarely listen to me when I say that, either :-).

For me..I can honestly say it was a mistake. These beautiful wild creatures are not easy to keep healthy and happy. I took on a tall order. But I stick to my commitments and care for them the best I can while learning everyday.

I guess I chose them as pets simply because I didnt know any better.

Ever had a dog or cat say "hello darlin" or "what ya doin?"

It's the companion you can talk to that will talk back.
It's the intelligence to have me figured long before I have them figured.
It's the cheekyness, the boldness and the individuality.
Most of all the unadulterated love and bond.

I have had dogs, cats, guinea pigs, goats, cows, horses, chooks, fish.
All of these pets give me love, but they rely on food to give them the bond. They adore me because I am the master, I am in control.

My parrots don't react because I give them food, they react when I talk to them, play with them but most of all when I hug them and give them my companionship. It is a mutual thing.

Like Koky said there is nothing like being owned by a parrot. I too have had different animals in my life but none like a parrots way of uplifting your spirits. You can see recent pics of the Brats in the Caique(Sassy) section and the Pio(Cuddles) section.

It's their intelligence for me. And a genuine love for all things feathered. I was the kid who cared for wild baby birds, and the weird kid who would hang out with and become friends with all the wild birds. Many would land on me, and in high school I had a blue Jay who used to land on me and follow me around. (my guess is that it was raised by people, and so was used to them as an adult) Ever since I can remember I've loved birds, it just in my veins.

I sort of jumped into bird ownership not fully realizing/understanding how rewarding the relationship could be. But my relationship with these feathered beings has given me such a respect for their intelligence. I'm amazed with everything about them - their ability to fly, their communication skills with each other and with humans, and their zest for life.

I've had cats, dogs, fish, rabbits, and guinea pigs throughout my life and while I love all furry creatures, these feathered guys have a whole new place in my heart. The birds are very different than my cats and dogs and I enjoy learning about those differences and learning how to better communicate with birds.
