Default What type of pellets do you feed?

I was curious as to what pellets everyone feeds their birds, if any. Do you feed colored or uncolored and why?

I really like the supreme fruity pellets! My grey likes a different color depending on the phase of the moon, alignment of the planets and the ambient temperature in the left front corner of the living room.

He won't touch the natural pellets.

I do mix several brands together. I just know that the first time I have a "oh crap" moment and don't realize I used the last bag of my mix...the local pet stores won't have the one brand I need. I figure mixing reduces the chances of that happening. They may be out of one but no way on all used brands.

Mango nibbles on the pellets. He seems to like Zupreem. Sammy isn't showing any noticeable interest yet.

I just picked up a bag of zupreem naturals to try in my macaw mix.

None of the brands listed are available in South Africa except maybe Harrisons. We get from Europe or local produced. I feed a fresh / cooked diet so the pellets are only there for entertainment value. Pellets are included to make sure my birds know it is food. If I am unable to feed them someone else can give pellets.

The pellets are colored although any soup prepared does not get stained water. The pellet just falls apart where sunk.

I've heard Harrisons are good but I think that is the same name mentioned in "feather plucker" circles. I'll stay away.

I've raised a lot of birds on Zupreme and have had wonderful success. Why mess with a good thing is the way I look at it.

Of course, any regular extruded diet is heavily supported by fresh stuff. If I eat it, they'll get some.

Emily peoples' choice of pellets may have more to do with availability and price.

I would never use colored pellets. My birds get primarily fresh then Harrisons mash for the budgies but not much...particularly the one with lipomas loves it. I like TOP organic and Foundation Formula organic. Neither are a complete diet. But neither have man made ingredients that concern me. Even though I give man made vitamins and calcium.

Pellets in budgies showed vitamin toxicity in a study by A&M and also problems with some mutations have been seen, so I pretty much avoid them. My Parrotlets however will kill for TOP or FF so I let them have them and hope there's no adverse reaction.

I'd consult with your vet about your Hys especially since they have specific needs. Harrison's makes more choices such as Hi Po. (not saying the Hys need that... just sayin...)

Ollie eats Zupreem fruitblend tiel sized. I've tried to convert her to natural, but she just won't eat it.

Actually, I'm not positive it was Harrisons mentioned in the feather pluckers circle. It may have been Roudybush.

Either way, I don't use either.

But the relation to feather plucking would be worth further researching the brands.
