#6 | | | Re: What Should I Pick? Toos are beatiful and very affectionate birds but they are incredibly destructive, very noisy and the archtypical velcro bird. If you don't spend hours with them every day, they start developing ever kind of aberrant behavior. And, it's easy to have the good intentions to spend hours and hours with them but ten, fifteen years later, the good intentions went out the window and all you have left is a very, very unhappy bird. They are the number one bird given up by owners and the number one for plucking and self-mutilation.
Yellow collard macaws are easier (everything is relative, of course, as there is no such thing as an 'easy' bird) but make sure you get a female because males tend to get quite hormonal after a number of years. Better still, if you can get a bonded pair.
And please, consider adoption instead of buying. There are lots and lots of perfectly good, healthy, affectionate birds out there in need of a good home. |

#8 | | | Re: What Should I Pick? I hold a special place for both too's and macaws. Both are amazing and I love them dearly. Definatly read mytoos.com. It will tell you so much about too's- things that some sites won't really say. Remember that a too is loud, demanding, destructive and very needy. They can also bite very hard (after experiencing this myself and seeing others as well) but then again, what bird can't? Too's are also very dusty, which means a constant need for air filters and vacuuming.
Macaws are also destructive, loud and demanding. The smaller mac's (such as the YCM) aren't usually as needy as some of the others, but you can't really generalize them. All birds are different and my advice to you would be to research, find a reputable breeder and/or rescue (seriously consider adopting, if the option is avalible), spend time with both and of course, talk to your mom |
