Default WARNING....tis the season!!!

4th of July is coming up next Wednesday. For those of us in the States, this should be a heads up for many reasons...When it comes to our fids, the loud noises most likely will scare the crap out of them.

I live in the city and I've been hearing them every evening around 6 pm. I react calmly with them and eventually take them in to bed before some of the big boomers start going off. Just a reminder to take whatever precautions you need to at this time.

I was wondering about that. This will be my first 4th, with Pita and I have no idea how he'll react. I know how he reacts to loud thunder, doesn't like it.

Any suggestion for a 1st timer? If I put him to bed early, won't the noise wake him up and scare him more because he won't see me? Should I let him stay up with me in case he gets scared?

Great reminder Lara!!! I remember New Years Amber and I stayed home cause of all the load fireworks. We have been turning the air purifier up on high to drown out the noise.

Oh, that's a toughy. If I were you and I still had only one bird, yea, I would probably stay up with them a bit and console them. Hopefully Pita will look to you for a reaction, even though he'll still probably be a little scared at least. If you look and act calm, he'll feed and react off of you. I was doing this a little with my guys tonight. Then the big boomers came out and the pencil neck, saucer eyes and anal lock was inevitable....with the birds, not me.

Good point. I did this too tonight and it worked. If that's not enough, a little easy background music may help too. Like Lawrence Welk, that'll put anyone to sleep.............forever.

anal lock....? Is this something I should know about with Pita.....LOL Sounds painfull!

Yeah, I'll just let him stay in his big cage with the door open, and I'll be on the couch right next to him, with the TV on. We'll celebrate together...LOL

So they watch you for a reaction? I didn't know that. I knew they could sense your moods, but I guess that makes sense in a flock setting. They would look to each other to see if there's danger and they should fly or not.

Thanx!

Wink Re: WARNING....tis the season!!!

I remeber my first 4th of July last year.. and got to see my first broken blood feather.. and I think I freaked more than the fid....

At New Years.. got smart ahead of time.. started feeding very weak camomile tea.. a few days in advandce.. (seems some? idiots can not tell/figure out the EXACT day of some holidays..)...and also day or two after..

I also give weak camomile tea if bad storms expected..

I still leave fresh reg water in.. but the fids seem to know that I am truing to do something for them.. I put the weak tea in treat cup.. and in the same place treats go..

They seem to think it is treat.. and are calmer when the festivities get going good...

I learned this from a friend.. that even steered me to a web site about it..

Will try to find the link or site.. but think had to do with winged wisdom...

Past my bed time.. and about to stumble to the bed...

Great responses and suggestions. Luckily loud noises don't bother my Fids either. Nelly actually tucks her head under her wing and goes back to sleep during thunder storms. Seems the noise bothers her mom more than her I would stay up and keep them company for awhile to let them know they are safe and mom is near by.

Oh gosh I'm reallly worried about this. They are doing the fireworks very close to our apartment this year. It will be a great view. But I'm worried of how Gracie will react to the loud booms. She seems pretty fearless sometimes. Well expect when my little nephew brings toy dinosaurs around. . . . lol
