#1 | | | Video of Baby giving me a ring... I put this in the training area, but I'm not sure where it needs to be.I'm so durn proud of my gurl, I'm putting it in there AND here! She has come so far in the three months since I got her.
Ok..here goes. This is Baby donating some change to the crock.
*I have never posted video online, so I'm not sure if it works ok or not. YouTube - Baby with ring
Her tailfeathers are pretty ragged looking, but remember she is a rehome and has come a long way. Also, she get's spray baths, but as soon as I get her perch trained better, she'll be headed to the shower.
She is cute. I'm very proud.
Mark
If anyone knows how to embed this video, I'd embed it. I have the url to embed, but don't know how to wrap it in html. |

#6 | | | Re: Video of Baby giving me a ring... Mark may I make a suggestion, I don't want you or her to go past your comfort level, so this is just food for thought to take or leave. You are the one that knows what's best for your situation.
When I got my Greenwing she was very sick and required extensive Vet care and medications twice a day. I had to get her out of her cage and handle her immediately, her life depended on it. She was cage-bound so not even an open door and letting her come out on her own was an option. Also she was scared to death of a handheld perch and would start screaming if I even held one in my hand, so that option was out.
I wrapped my arm in a dishtowel and secured it with duct tape. Then I wrapped a flesh colored Ace Bandage around that. I reached my arm in the cage and took a powerful bite that almost dropped me to the floor, despite my armor. But I had to keep going forward. I said "Step-Up" and she stepped right up. It was a exaggerated and awkward step up, and it was pretty evident she was scared and wasn't sure what she should do or what I would do.
I made this 'Step-Up' the most rewarding thing she had ever done in her life. We spent the next several hours bonding, playing and getting used to each other. Since that first awkward moment she has NEVER bitten again and I have never had to wrap my arm again to get her out of her cage.
What I learned from her actions and subsequent motions and actions was that she was VERY scared. Not so much of me, or my arm, but scared of the unknown. I really don't think she could have made the leap of faith on her own without a little push to ever do it on her own. Kind of like the kid standing on the edge of the dock for hours, possibly days, who can't get past the unknown fear to take his first dive. Once he does it, he says, "Geez, that wasn't so bad, I like this!"
You have done so much with Baby and have definitely formed a very special bond. She may need you to have more faith in her ability to do this than she does. |

#7 | | | Re: Video of Baby giving me a ring... No, Karen that's ok to ask that. Baby is not ready for that...yet. It's sort of a sense, I guess, I have about this. I don't know for sure what her past was. She is too hesitant. I just feel like if I push myself on her that she'll run off screaming . i have wrapped my arm in ace and she attacks that. I have put a glove on and she attacks that. I feel her trusting me more and i trust her more. Dunno, I just feel like I might damage a trust that I have worked hard to build. She wants to be near me, she moves over to the cage by me if I sit down. She gets as close to me as she can if I'm by the cage. I occasionally stick my arm up, tight wrist, and let her step towards it. Her disposition is, I would say, skeptical. She's very smart and very affectionate, on her terms.
I figure I'll ride this out a lil more and gradually work towards the arm. But, if I could get her perch trained, that'd be ok and I'll take it from there.
Regardless, I can tell you that Baby will never be on my shoulder. Personal decision based on what I've seen a Zon do to a face when it appeared to be happy on a shoulder.
But thanks! I'm glad that worked out great for you. |
