Default Very interesting African Grey

Browsing through flickr photo sets, I found pics of a lovely African Grey, whose owner takes lovely photos of him.

However, two things about this grey are interesting. First, he has red feathers all up his breast. I've never seen that on a grey. Anyone have any idea about that? Second, they guy says that Sam sleeps laying down. There are some pics on there documenting Sam's unique sleeping style.
Have a look:

That is strange. I have seen the little spots of red (like on Scarlett and Bella) but never like that. He is gorgeous though! And those are some great shots!

Those are great photos! He is called a red factor grey. Many cags and tags have red body feathers, but lose them with their first molt. A red factor keeps their many red feathers forever.

Ollie had quite a bit of red, on her back, sides, and down her legs. Now she just has some on her back.

I think the "Red Factor" is not as uncommon as most folks think. Both Ruby and Gracie could be considered Red Factor, but with Ruby they are the ones she removes first so you really don't get to see them. Her chest should be full of them and down both her legs as well as shoulder and back areas.
Gracie has some on her neck and some pink down feathers.

That is one outstanding looking grey! I love the hat picture.

They are considered red factors or king congos. Folklore had it that they were treated like royalty when in the wild by the natives because they are thought to posess special powers. If you read the species profile I wrote about Congo african greys, it mentions it there.

Sydney is also a red factor and Mike is right that they are more common then people know. Alex, Dr Irene Pepperbergs grey, has a red signature feather on his shoulder/neck.

Wendy, our own Alleaa, had a grey that is a heavy red factor.

Beautiful birds for sure!

I remember seeing him a while ago and thinking it was a photoshop edit until I saw all the pictures - lol!!

Little Schroeder has never had a speck of red on him besides his tail, but I think red factor greys are gorgeous!

Thanks everyone! Very interesting info. I love the fact that Dr Pepperberg's Alex and Lisa's Sydney are both red factors. They seem very special. It's very funny that alex has one red feather on his shoulder, to me, because Humphrey has one yellow feather on her green shoulders. She also has one tiny yellow feather over each eye. I call it her eyebrows.

Lisa - you are always right there with the answer!!

We have had a few come in with a lot of red. I was never sure if hey keep he red or not. We had one that was almost totally red on its chest. I often wonder if he kept those feathers. The people lived really far away, so it's not a bird I would see come back often.
