Re: Trying out the Aviary Well, we're getting closer to done. We actually went out and purchased a heavy-duty (ish) accordion "easy set up" 12x12 dining canopy. We're ordering the insect screen to go around the edges, too (GI Joes didn't have the insect screens in stock for the 12x12 size). The canopy totally covers the aviary, and it has a steeply pitched roofline so rain and Doug fir needles slide off. Once we've got that insect screen and the proper top on the cage, along with the sun screen for the south and west facing sides, I think we'll have it about as bird safe outdoors as we can reasonably make it within our budget--no bugs, wild birds or bird poop in, yet the birds still get to enjoy the great outdoors. We've actually gone over budget on this, at about $1300, so this will just have to do :-).
The birdbath is made of a large bisque-fired terra cotta pot with a very large bisque-fired (that means fired once to make it impermeable to water, but not glazed and fired a second time) terra cotta saucer attached. Attached with a very low VOC adhesive that is not accessible to the birds. The large part of the pot sits on the ground, and the saucer is glued to what would normally be the bottom. It's very sturdy and heavy duty, and should be up to the weight and abuse of macaws. Even if they chip it, it shouldn't do them any harm.
