Default Trip to the pet store

And no we did not bring anyone new home with us, the kids did try to talk me into it Nolan(7) and Alyssa(5) came to spend the weekend, when I took them home today we went to the pet store to get the Bearded Dragon some food. Well they had 2 different birds then last time we were there so the kids were excited. There was a Panama Amazon that was playing with them, if they looked at him he wouldn't say a word, but as soon they stopped talking to him he would chatter away at them. They loved that Then there was a little Quaker that was really shy. If anyone came close he would do his little Quaker growl and scamper away. The kids knew that meant he was scared, so they went really slow with him and talked soft to him. It wasn't long and he came right up to them. Alyssa true to form stuck her finger right in the cage, and the Quaker nipped it a little and once again true to form she did not react or back down. One of the employees came up to tell them to be careful because he would bite. Alyssa told him she didn't care and she doesn't mind when birds bite her. ( and she really doesn't, she has taken a couple good bites in the past and if you didn't see it happen you would never know, she is very calm about it) Nolan told the guy if he is afraid of getting bit he should make a fist and offer that to the bird, because it's harder to get bit that way cause the skin is tight. I'm so proud of them

Thanks all, JR you made me blush

It is really cool to see them so bird oriented, they are my hope for my birds futures. I do think some of it is because they have never known a life without birds. Nolan loves to tell people that Sarge (B&G) was his first babysitter. He was about a week old the first time he came to stay and Sarge was so into him. He would sit on the handle of his carrier and awww him. If you took Nolan out of the room Sarge would scream like crazy and come looking for him. When Nolan was about 2 he was bit my Chiefer(M2) and had to have a couple stitches. Now when he is sitting and cuddling with her he will show her his finger and ask her if she remembers biting him (Chiefer didn't live here at the time) Alyssa amazes me when she gets a bite. Just last year Zoey(B&G) grabbed on of her fingers and gave it a really good pinch. It made me flinch when I saw it happen, but she never moved her finger until Zoey let go and kept saying it didn't hurt. You know it had to though, because it bruised her entire finger. Also last year Alyssa's younger brother slammed her pinkie finger in the door and took a good part of the tip off. Her Mom said when they were in the ER having it worked on the only thing that worked to make her stop crying was for her to tell her Mom all the birds names and what kind they were.

Cute story about them being raised around the birds and dogs. As soon as they were old enough to understand we started teaching them the things that were poison to both the birds and dogs. So they call everything that is bad for the birds and dogs poison. Well one day they were at their Grandma's when she overheard Nolan asking Alyssa "does that poison taste good". Needless to say she panicked and wanted to know what Alyssa was eating and was very relieved to find out it was really just a chocolate cookie.

Mmmm poisen cookies! Bright little children you have there. It is our responsibility to teach children how to respect animals, both as pets and in the wild. You have obviously done a great job!

What precious stories! ha! Great job with the kids. Wish all parents were like you and would take the time to teach them things. Maybe they need to inherit Ruby! ha!
