Default Thoughts on my fantasy bird room

I sure hope that someday we will find the land we want to build a custom home. I would love to build a room for the birds where they can co-exist cage free. A place that can have real trees, ferns and safe plants hanging, tall ceilings, and places for them to roost at night. I figure 20x20x15. I would want a misting system for humidity, and an actual water feature. I want to set up feeding stations, and places to forage. Maybe all made of glass like a giant green solarium so I can just hose it down. That would mean I could go on vacation. Someone could come in, set up feeding stations, and no worries of Mr Buddy having to poop. Id let their wings grow, and just let them be birds. I dont see the idea being too difficult. Its just finding the right property to do it on. Id like a door to an outside caged and screened room for full sunshine and fresh air. I wonder though, would they still want shoulder rides and to sit on my lap to cuddle? Would I be able to hold them and help preen? It all makes feel a little bird brained!

That's my dream too! Currently we're working on getting flight cages and want to build an outdoor aviary, but ultimately my goal is to have an area like you described above - a place where they can be cage-free and have access to an outdoor enclosure when weather permits.

It is my belief that if you already share a bond with them, I do think they'll still want to hang out with you.

They do. At least, some of them do, the medium to large ones that were imprinted on people and have not been severely abused do and always will.

But, if I were you, Leigh, I would not consider all glass walls. You need walls to secure the big perches to (cannot count on just the trees growing in there because the birds would, most likely, kill them in a couple of years and it would be impossible to replace them once the room is finished). And it would be too hot in the summer (the greenhouse effect)... unless you want to set up an A/C system with lots and lots of vents near the ceiling (need to difuse the cold blasts).

Wow!!! That sounds awesome! I think they'd still want to hang out with you, since they are already bonded to you.

That sounds wonderful Leigh! Someday that is what I want for Ollie as well, almost exactly how you described it. Another thing about the all glass walls is the birds' feeling of security. I think it might stress them out having to always be looking in every direction. I know that when Ollie is in her travel cage in the midde of a room she is almost always on full alert and unable to relax. But 2 or maybe 3 glass walls would be awesome I'd think!
