Default Telephone repair and babies in nests

A woman came into the store this evening asking if I could help her with food for a baby wild bird. She proceeded to tell me that the bird was on the ground. I asked her to go back and put it in the nest. She told me that the worker from the telephone company took them out of their nest and put them on the ground and destroyed the nest. He told her he is required to do so!!! Two had already been "visited" by a cat and were dead. From the description of the baby, it is not going to make it either. Didn't have any feathers yet.

Is there anything that can be done about this? Isn't this animal cruelty?

I would say it is. I would call the non emergency # for the police and ask.
It also depends on what species it is. Here, we can not disturb nests or the property they are on depending on species. But then...if the workers had to do a job...what are they suppose to do with the nest. Gosh Kathie, I don't know. Make a few phone calls.

It is certainly animal cruelty, but whether or not the law sees it that way is another question, and probably varies by locality.

Quakers are an invasive species in FL. The Electric company, the Telephone company and the landscape people routinely destroy nests and kill the babies. Ocassionally the workers will call FWCAS to have someone pick up the babies but the power company now goes out at night and gases the nests with CO2. Jon Mark Davey wrote a book and DVD about it called "Parrots in the City" about Miami.

This is why there are so many Quakers in the FWCAS rescue....They used to bring them to the Pelican Man Sanctuary (now closed) but once in the Sanctuaries, they can not be released back into the wild. That is illegal-evidently, killing them is not!
