Default Sprouts and Stuff

I'im sitting here perusing the web for something to buy my fids. (a weekly event, hehe). Anyhow, I just bought a 5 pound bad of sprout mix from Chinaprairie.com. I don't sprout that often, but want to get to the point where my birds are eating 1/2 sprout and 1/2 pellet as their base. I also want to start giving them more green leafy veggies. Does anyone have any success with sprouts? how often and hnow much do you give your birds? I"m now waiting patiently for my order to arive

Yes I'm doing "something" with sprouts every day. LOL either starting a batch, finishing, refrigerating whatever....

OK the China Prarie mix has beans in it and the most important thing is you MUST have half inch tails on beans to feed birds. Otherwise they have to be cooked. Everything else you can feed as a soak seed meaning after about 14 hours because that is when the seed is most alive when it cracks open germinating. Any time after 14 hours is bonus and you have sprouting beginning.

But because you have the beans in there then you either have to pick the seed out before the beans are finished (like 4-5 days) or let the seed sprout.

China Prarie has quite alot so it's annoying to pick out.

I would suggest using an ACV water or a water cleaner called Sparkle or Saniclens if you're going to fully sprout now in the hot summer. Rinse twice a day or three times.

The sprouts are super loved and the best, being live food. BUT They are super high protein and you may see behavioral changes especially now in breeding season. Breeders feed sprouts alot to kick off breeding season. Abundance and all that.

Some people feed twice a week, breeders much more. I myself give them every day but only a sprinkle. And always with dark leafy greens and veggies. The high beta carotine ones.

They would rather have soak seed or sprouts than anything in the world! And I've heard of birds with lipomas almost reverse on an all sprout diet.

If you want more flexibility though, you might consider purchasing a soak/sprout mix without beans because its really annoying waiting all that time and then if you mess up and they go bad you have to start all over. With a beanless mix you can put it in water at dinner time and they can eat it the next am for breakfast.

And sorry to be a bummer but I found the China Prarie to be very gummy. She must have flax seed in there. Which is a mess in a soak or sprout. But if you've used it before then you're probably ok with that.

Its also an excellent moist food for stuff like supplements to stick to.

I have an ez sprouter but it's just as easy to use a fine mesh strainer over a big bowl in a dim room that wont have bacteria flying up into it. And I always move the sprouts when I vacuum or clean or change cage papers etc.

success with sprouts? I guess I could call it that............. Sprouts are the only thing, and I mean the one and only thing, that all four of my fids eat. Every day at 5 PM its sprout time!!! Sophie literally does cage crawling back flips as I dole out the sprouts. Now that China Prairy is back I may order oce in awhile from them again. Our local Whole Foods just re did their store and quit selling a lot of bulk foods I use for sprouts.
Good luck with it!!

I'm using that right now! From Bird Paradise LOL. WE love it. And I like it much better than China Prarie (sorry OP)

I also use Sproutpeople, Mr Sprout (The Mail Order Catalog but he's online too) and I just ordered from Nature's Choice when I got the Foundation Formula Pellets. I swear Piper and Toby get MAD if they cant eat that stuff!

I feed sprouts daily. I make enough to last 2 days (they start to get a bit bitter around day 4), so I sprout away. The mix at Chinaprairie is very good. My birds love sprouts.

Cindy, I just ordered the TOP All-In-One Seed Mix. Do you have any suggestions or instructions for someone who has proven in the past, to be 'sprouting impaired'?
