Default Red, Blue, Purple...?

Oh I'm just so happy with Lucy's progress! If the camera wasn't screwy, I'd take pictures! Lucy'schest has SO many feathers all over it! Beautiful red, the vos purple on her chest and the RS blue on her wings. And yes, she's even got a little purple eye liner too However, I'm quite puzzled by one thing. Lucy has got random yellow feathers all over her! Around her vent, there's bright yellow feathers. Where her right wing and back meet, there's a yellow feather. And under her left and right wing, yellow. She had a very dull one when we first got her that fell off while molting. However, I'm kind of worried that she might be yellow, lol!

You'll want to call her vet right away but don't panic. It can be from meds like Jim's Sophie. Perhaps she took meds before you got her? But I've seen it in a vitamin a deficiency too. And there could be other causes I'm not familiar with.

I agree with Cindy, I would talk to the vet. Though I have heard of plucking birds growing in odd colored feathers. I don't remember the reasoning - something about damage to the follicle maybe?

Also liver damage can cause different colored feathers as well as lysine defences. I would also seek a vets advice.

I know birds that have plucked or are feather pickers can grow in abnormal colored feathers but the usual first thought is diet and/or liver.

Do you feed a colored pellet ?

I read an article about someone describing their bird looking like it had yellow chickenpox. They removed colored pellets from the diet and the bird feathered in just fine after that.

You can try a diet higher in Vitamin A foods. Beta Carotene produces the red factor and she may be a little low on this.

I agree that a vet check is in order. I would have some blood panels run; check liver values and I would probably run a cholesterol check also, as a high cholesterol can affect the liver.

I've always heard that oddly colored feathers are related to health problems as well. Of course, it could be nothing, or just related to her plucking...but better safe than sorry! I hope she's okay Dom! Keep us posted on her!
