Default Question for those who feed Almonds

We have a minor emergency here, in that Ollie's stash of Almonds in the shell went bad and I can't find any more! I guess they are only sold in stores around here during the holiday season, and now you can only buy them already shelled. Ollie LOVES her almonds, and we can't go long without them!

For those of you who order your almonds online, where do you get them from? My last order came from some company in California, and the shells were really brittle and could be removed with a flick of my fingernail. I would like to find some that Ollie has to work to get into! Any tips??

Camille - I believe Drs Fosters and Smith sells them. Another place that does is Parrot Place.
Here is the link :

Parrot Place

They have some really nice stuff. My birds really like the Fruit Jambalaya and the Fruit and Veggie Jambalaya.

Camille, I order from NutsOnline. I can't say enough about the high quality. I even buy peanuts from them now. The peanuts in the supermarket are so small and nasty looking, compared to what I can order. Really quick shipment also. I have to order today too, Kita also loves her almonds.

Do you have a Costco store near you? They almost always have them shelled in bags.

I always stock up on extra nuts at Christmas time as the prices are the lowest then. I have a deep freezer and store them in there to use for months after. Nuts keep very well in the freezer.

Sorry, Camille -- I know you are a student and probably don't have access to a large freezer. At least it sounds like there are a lot of good on-line sources for you to check out. Good luck! My greys also LOVE their "corknuts"!!

Heck, Ingrid, given where you live, you can probably store yours outdoors and skip the whole freezer thing -- at least until June, right? LOL

Nope, no Costco. That was going to be my next question: If you can freeze nuts. Good to know you can!! Thanks for the links! I need to get some ordered quickly so we get them next week. Hopefully the baby can survive until then...

I just might take you up on that Ingrid!

I knew I should have stocked up when I saw some in Walmart last month- I just didn't even think about nuts going bad...

Camille, if you have a local growers cooperative, you might check that. That's where we get ours year-round. Heck, just yesterday I bought 11 lbs. of shelled mac nuts at a mere $1/lb. from our local co-op!! about 10 1/2 lbs. of them are in the freezer.

Good luck.
