Default Question about wooden perches

When I lived in Hawaii, I used guava for my perches and for the huge bird tree. All perches since have been store bought manzanita or wooden dowels or the cement perches for manicures.

It's been awhile since I looked into other options for perches. Today the other half tells me that they are getting ready to cut down the mighty oak next to the deck.

Oak? Hmmmmmmmm

My memory is failing me and I don't remember if oak is an acceptable/safe wood for our feathered friends.

Anyone have a list of safe woods to use with our birds?

Appreciate any responses.

This thread should help you out: Safe and Dangerous Woods

Both list Oak as unsafe.

I stay away from any outside branches- they may have chemicals, bugs, other things growing on them, etc... Ollie and Dakota have many natural wood shaped perches, but I've purchased them.
Here are some sites: Birds : Natural Perches
Super Bird Creations Bolt On for Bird Parrot Cages - Alder Wood Perch: WindyCityParrot.com, Parrot Cages, Parrot Toys, Parrot Supplies, Parrot Food

If you do decide to go with a bird safe wood from outside, make sure you clean them very well. I think the best way is to bake them in the oven for awhile to kill anything that may be on them.

Ollie loves her Sandyperches, and in her 2 years of life I've only had to trim 2 of her nails one time: Parrotopia Sandy Perch for Bird and Parrot Cages - Bolt On Sandy Perch: WindyCityParrot.com, Parrot Cages, Parrot Toys, Parrot Supplies, Parrot Food

Rope perches are also great on birdie feet: Birds : Rope Perches

Ollie and Dakota always have at least 5 different types of perching surfaces on any given day.

So many different forums on here! After I posted I went and visited a few other forums and saw the post. Thanks for the info.

I do have rope perches and chain perches too. Guess I use a little of everything.

Thanks again.

Now I'm off to look at some other forums with the hopes of avoiding asking redundant questions!!!
