Default My cockatoo has a weird habit.

My cockatoo, for some reason, likes to put his claws in his mouth. He can do this for like hours. Sometime when I leave his cage door open so he can come out and sit with me, he'd rather stay in his cage and mess with his feet. Hes not biting them or doing any harm to them. Its like hes licking them. I have no idea why hes doing this. Anyone had a problem like this?

Does he have any injury to his feet? Do they look abnormal/sore in any way? My grey will groom her feet (chew on, around, under her nails), but not for hours at a time.

No, they look normal, which is why I dont get what hes doing. I put alittle pressure on each claw to see if he would scream cuz it hurt, but he didn't do anything. I tried washing them, cuz I thought maybe something was on it that I didn't notice and he still does it. Hes got toys, food and everything. I tried bitter spray, which didn't work. Its ok I guess since hes not hurting himself but I think its weird.

Both of my toos do it for hours on end. I think its part of preening for them. My RB2 does it clear up the ankle.

My TOO does it too. But mostly after a shower or a good spritz. It's like is cleaning her nails. As long as his feet are healthy I wouldn't worry.

My vasa likes to grab his beak with his foot and pull at it. He will sometimes pull at his beak so hard he falls foward....I pretend I don't see it

Just for fun see if it's peanuts or soy in his food? I have no idea if this is true in birds but mammals mess with their feet first when they have allergies....starting with licking....

I'd probably try and bribe him outta that so it doesn't expand to overpreening other body parts...I wouldnt use the bitter stuff...

Maybe mention it to your vet see if they have seen it in allergies or something...
