Good Morning Y'all...... I thought I had basically explained the window flight in the past - if ya really need a picture, I will have to take one for ya. But not really necessary, I don't think
(Joanie, you behave yourself now, my mysteriosity is not a funny thing to roll on the floor about - it is serious stuff - you know about those Interpol agents who are still on the hunt)
Hey Gang, these flights are very simple to construct & to imagine IMO: Ya just purchase a roll of G.A.W. Aviary wire whatever height ya want. I would get the 1/2"x3" wire spacing if ya have large birds because it is stronger or I would get the 1/2"x1" wire spacing for smaller birds - although you can use the former for the smaller guys & gals also. Rolls usually come in 50 or 100 ft. lengths.
Then ya purchase a good pair of
flush cutting wire cutters, purchase the "hog rings" or J-clips and the clip/ring tool(s). Cut the wire the length you want the flight and then attach the sections with the rings or J-clips, I prefer the rings as they are easier IMO to remove. Both come either galvanized or in stainless steel
(Btw, you can also purchase S.S. wire I believe). I should have done that myself
(I was not aware of that back when I bought my own wire rolls = darn!!
). I plan to purchase S.S. wire in the future. Use the Tapcons
(concrete screws as already stated, usually blue in color but have seen them in metal color) to secure the flight onto the wall of your concrete home. If ya have a wood home then ya use wood screws and the same washers. Cut the door/service openings the size ya like and Voila - you are almost done. I recommned flat sheet metal
(galvanized) for the roof or ya can slope it if ya like. I bend a 3'' width of the metal all along one side at a 90 degree angle and attach that also to the Compound walls using the same Tapcon screws and washers. I also like a 45 degree bend on the front part of the flight - the length of the cage
(directs water flow even further from the suspended flight). I also double wire the bottoms of the suspended flights to protect the feet
(this is also useful if you want to use a tray to catch most of the food waste and the bird droppings - not necessary but more hygenic and less bugs/mice/etc. out in the yard attracted to the waste). You can attach a piece of polycarbonate/plexiglass/sheet-metal/acrylic
(I would not use wood for sanitary reasons and because wood harbors insects, fungus, mites, etc.) on both ends of the flight to cut the draft and help protect the food and toys and perches from getting wet in driving rain storms. I make sure there is an over-hang also on the front & two sides to keep rain from running off the roof and down the wire, which the birds could get sick from - as wild birds etc. may land/walk on top of cage and defecate there etc......
Take the screen of course off your window and add a service/entry door there on the back-side of the cage/flight to bring the birds in thru - into your home etc.
(no chance of escape if the flight covers the whole window).... Now if ya live in a cold climate, you can even add a heater to the enclosure and then I would also add another sheet of polycarbonate to the front of the flight to hold in the heat for the most part
(in winter). Install that safely of course so the bird(s) can't get to the electrical wires or the heater itself.
I think these window flights are great because the bird can be a bird out there in them, the droppings and food waste stays outside along with the seed moths and your bird has natural sunshine, humidity, sights to see
(in addition to its toys). When you want your bird inside for interaction with you & the family, you can safely bring him/her in by simply raising the window and opening the service door. I recommend the flights be 7&1/2 ft. long x 3&1/2ft. deep x 4ft. or 6 ft. high
(the size heights the wire rolls usually come in). That is because the sheet metal comes in 8ft. lengths usually, although ya can get 10 ft. lengths which would be even better IMO.
Feel free to ask openly or PM me any further questions regarding these flights. I rather it be open though so everyone can share.
