Bowie's sister, Blondie, is still handfeeding on pretty much the identical schedule/amount of formula, and I assume their red dominant sister still at the bird store is, too. Don't ask me why--the vet says there's nothing physically wrong with Bowie aside from one very slightly elevated enzyme count, for which he's being treated. She seems to think it's ok, if a bit odd.... I have friends who hypothesize all sorts of reasons why, from the time of their development when they had their wings clipped in the store, to them just being spoiled. I figure they'll all wean when they're ready :-). |
Jewel is almost 5 mon ths old and is still on 2 big handfeedings a day. Her brother at the store is almost done weaning, only 15cc's a day. Tey told me most likely its beause of the spoiled factor as aposed to being weaned at a store. |

Josh, that makes sense, except for both my friend's and my macaws live in separate places many miles apart--and they're on the exact same feeding schedule--at their insistence! LOL! They may be spoiled, but if they are, the bird store started it! *grins*
It makes me feel a bit better and less worried to know that we're not the only ones with late weaners (no laffing!), though :-). As I recall, my GW, Arthur, didn't wean 'til between 5 and 5 1/2 months of age, but if Bowie keeps up at this rate, he'll still be handfeeding at 6 months. We shall see.... |

He was worth the extra work though. | Thank you SO much, Joyce! Knowing my friend and I aren't the only ones who have gone through this makes me feel a LOT better, especially when the outcome is a healthy bird. |

I am sure macaws can hang on to handfeeding for a long time. Pinky a sun conure would not wean till 111 days normal time is about 70days. |
