Default If you had an unlimited amount...

...of money and resources, what is the ONE thing you would buy/build for your fid(s)?

I know I asked the question, but I don't know my answer yet (its really hard to pick just one thing!)!

A big outdoor aviary, with tons of space and real trees. Maybe have a part of it that could be inclosed for the winter, but that they could still get sun light from. I think that would be the ultimate happiness for them. To have a as close to natural habitat as I could provide, but we could still come out and play with them in it.

If I had an unlimited amount of money and resources?
I would build my fids a world free from war, poverty and hunger ... other than that I want my own Biosphere so the rest of the world can ... er, leave me alone.

I was also thinking along the lines of an aviary. The weather is so crazy here in Kansas, that I don't think I want something permanent outside. The winters are too cold, the summers are too hot, and in between its too dang windy to even be outside. I think I would build/have someone build for me an incredible indoor aviary with all sorts of awesome high-tech stuff. That way I would never have to worry about the weather, but then I would still have a smaller, semi-mobile outdoor space for nice-weather playtime.

Wouldn't it be nice to hire a staff of people who could do all the "grunt" work associated with birdkeeping so that all our time with the birds would be "quality" time? As it is now, I multi-task as I do all the food prep for my birds -- usually got a bird on my shoulder or on a perch nearby that I can talk and interact with -- in an effort to use my time wisely with them all. Izzy usually "assists" me as I clean and refill water bowls in the morning -- she has a thing for the water coming out of the faucet (loves to slurp directly from the tap!).

A huge indoor playgym, like something the size of the outdoor play gyms you take little kids to play on.I am talking like really really really big and made of tasty chewable wood, custom made for my fids. Don't need an indoor avairy, my house already is one lol!

I would build a huge outdoor aviary that was climate controlled with free-flying capabilities, lots of safe trees, with the ability to remove the roof in the summer to allow fresh air and sunshine (obviously, the roof being made of a material that would now allow escape). I'd have beautiful tile floors with drains so that the entire aviary could be easily cleaned. That's what I would do.

Edited to add: I didn't read the other responses until after I responded. Funny how many of us think alike!!

About 1000 acres of countryside and a proper aviary to cover it all so that my babies could do what the good Lord intended for them to do--fly!

an island. A cage no matter how big, is still a cage. This way I get around that little idea!!

I would update my indoor aviary which is something I have planned for the future anyway. Of course with an unlimited budget I would go all high-tech. I would have a burglar proof outdoor flight attached to the window with security cameras. There would be a motion detectable shower with a perch that the bird sits on and gets a shower any time they want. I'd like a refrigerated veggie dispenser so the birds could maybe peck at something and pre-chopped veggies would come out. The walls and windows would all be easy-clean Plexiglass. Instead of aviary wire, there would be cage bars on the front like the bedroom cage but from ceiling to floor. Webcam hook up so I can spy on them from work (assuming I haven't won the lotto to afford all this). OK, that's the DREAM aviary!

Realistically, I am still going to renovate the bird room to make it even easier to clean. My husband and I won't always have the fitness level we do now and we plan to grow old with ALL our loving Fids around us. When we bring a bird into our home, we make a lifetime commitment. I'm going to completely reline the walls and window sills in Plexiglass so they wipe down easier. I'm going to redesign the feeding station too. We will always need newspapers on the floor but that's no big deal, just grab the soiled ones and put down new ones!
