He is emaciated due to not being able to reach his dishes and when he did the other lovebirds he was with kicked him off the dishes. So getting him up to a healthy diet is my first order of business.
Dayna, if his diet has been quetionable you may also want to talk to Dr. Ford about giving some Calci-Boost. It may stop the problem from getting any worse.

Thanks everyone.

He does have the worst splayed leg I have ever seen. One leg is totally normal. The other leg sticks UP from the side. It causes him to not be able to perch or climb. It really does get in the way.

I have emailed a few places that have dealt with similar issues. It is too late to do any type of sponge, tissue treatment. Like with a broken leg that has already healed.

I will keep looking myself and keep checking in here.

Thanks again. I want to see him in a pet home.

Dayna I really think when he get strength back up he will be able to do well.

I had a quaker that had one leg stick straight out - he was a great balancer and would stand on just one leg.

My other two birds also have legs that kind of stick out to the side and do very well.

The key is to fix the cage up to his needs.

Hi Dayna -- how did you get bitten on the face? Are you okay?

Joannie, I sure did. By the tres Maria DYH amazon Cassidy.

I look like I HAD a bull ring in my nose and someone ripped it out. He was hanging by my nose and I made the mistake (?) of ripping him off my face.

I forgoed the stitches, I have no feeling in my nose in that area and the immediate surrounding areas.

It really sucks. I love him though and I think the little beasty loves me too!

He kinda lept about 4 feet off his cage whilst singing to me.

Dayna - thanks for caring so much for this little guy!

I know of a GW who had an amputated leg. He ended up dealing with it just fine.

Do you think it is possible that, once you get him healthy again, he will be able to use the good wing to flutter around? The GW ended up using his one wing for balance. I realize that is not an option now, but perhaps after he has the strength to be able to use his good wing, he will be able to get around a bit better? On what side is the splayed leg and on what side is the good wing? Hopefully they are on the same side. Perhaps he can use his good leg and the wing on the opposite side for balance? Grabbing at straws here. I will say tons of prayers for this little one.

This is a real heart-breaker - I think all creatures/individuals with special needs make us really think about the quality of life & what it really means.

Being a ground dweller - that might work - i can't believe that no one did anything about his poor leg.

I remember seeing someone's bird's photos about re-training the leg with a splint & was so surprised it can be done - it would make a great sticky for whoever has those photos.

He's probably starved for love & affection & knows how at risk he is. I don't envy you at all over this. I hate tough calls.

Do what you have to - we'll support you if we can. I hope the story ends well but he might not stay strong. If only a special person with the time & understanding was available - like someone who is also handicapped(?).

I just wanted to show you some pics of my birds with leg deformities that do very well. You will see that they have platforms to use for lying and perching.

Oh, Dayna, I figured it must have been Cassidy who nailed you. Sure do hope it doesn't leave a scar as it heals.
