Default I have a question.

Ok, maybe someone here can help me. Here's my question. I have two beautiful cages that my Alexandrine's call home, and my little girl Blondie chewed through the perch that came with her cage. I went to Lowe's and purchased some dowel rods the size of the orignal perch that was in her cage. I found them in the section of Lowe's where they have the wood turnings trims ect. Is this ok, or did I just make a huge mistake. I would have purchased a manzanita or something to that effect, but no one carries the size and the length that it would take to put in her cage. I would have also used a branch from a tree, but I don't have one that would be safe for her, and I don't know anyone who has a fruit tree or a safe tree to snag any branches from. So, now what do I do?

Default Re: I have a question.

I do most of my shopping for my birds online - there's just not a good selection of bird items in the pet stores around here. Dowels are not the greatest perches to use. I think mainly because it's best to have a variety of perches - in different materials and widths to keep their feet healthy. As far as whether they are safe or not - as long as they are untreated they are okay in that respect. ( I believe most of the dowels you can get at places like Lowes are untreated - I'm sure if you call and ask them they would be able to tell you for sure.)

Bird Cages, Bird Supplies - Bird.com Has a good selection of perches and you can get free shipping if your oder is at least $49.

Home - The Birdsafe Store Joe has a good selection of natural wood perches (and others)

If you can't identify the wood, and you absolutely need something to tide her over until you can get another one the right length, maybe you could pick up a couple of shorter ones locally?
