Default How Many Toys?

I'm curious to know how many toys your birds have in their cages and their play areas? How often do you rotate toys?

Mine all have 5-7 toys in their cages and about as many on their play areas. I rotate toys at least 1x a week. I don't always take every toy out and replace with a new/different one - but try to do at least 1/2 - then the other 1/2 the next week.

It depends on the bird honestly. Prinny has the most, but that is because I can fit alot more toys in her cage, because they tend to be smaller. She probaby has about 10 in there right now. The rest of the gang have about 5-7 toys each inside. And they all have about 3-4 toys on the outside of the cage to play with when they are out.

I try to rotate every 2 weeks. I also go through every week and refurbish all the toys they destroyed, so I don't waste any parts.

I don't rotate toys on any kind of regular basis, I do take out for washing. I remove toys when they have lost interest and then it is new when it comes back. Mine also have 5-7 toys at any given time. Today in the cage is 2 hanging wood block type toys, 3 balls, a rawhide bone, a paper cup, a toilet roll inside and a rope offcut. On top of the cage which they have access to when not in the aviary, plastic baby keys - wont be rotated only 2 keys left, a raw hide ring,a barrel, 2 bells and a kabob. In the aviary tied to the atom is
hanging block toys, balls with treats, chewing rope, and barrels. They also have mullberry branches to destroy. Except for the barrel and bells, most of what they have gets destroyed before they loose interest. They also have toys they can only play with when we are playing with them due safety.

including foot toys between 7 and 10 toys in the cage. As they were out they go to the play gyms. I re arrange the cages every other week or so.

Good question - but I believe it all depends on the bird! My DYH amazon destroys new toys within a week so she gets new and rotated ones (if there are any left! LOL) every week. My Goffin on the other hand doesn't destroy her toys as quickly, but rather becomes bored with them so I rotate her's every 2/3 weeks. My Rosie loves to take apart these wonderful baskets filled with toys and shredders that Bird Paradise in NJ sells - he usually destroys these in 2 weeks. Busy beaks are happy beaks! Each bird has an average of 5 toys.

It also depends on the bird here. Dakota's cage is huge for him, so there is a LOT of room to put lots of stuff in there. He probably has > 10 toys at any given time. They don't get rotated too often, he really doesn't play with them that much. He loves to sit on his swing, and he has a bell that he absolutely loves that I never take out.

Ollie has 3-4 big toys in her cage at any given time. Sometimes she has more if they are smaller. I rotate them every week to 2 weeks for brand new ones. I either clean them, or take apart and salvage any good pieces to make new toys out of. She has 4 toys on her hoopball, 4 toys on her PVC palace, 5 toys on her bottlebrush, and 1 on her boing. Those get rotated every 2 weeks, or sooner if needed.

When you guys are cleaning or rotating toys - do you also move around the perches etc. inside of the cage? I do on some of mine. But on a few of the cages - I have a hard time situating everything the way I like - so once I figure out a good way to put it all in - I leave it. I need to rearrange Kirby's cage. I don't like the way I have things now. Trying to figure out a way to make more use out of his space - and yet not move things to where he's going to be pooping on 1/2 of it!

Like you, once I find a place for perches where poop doesn't land on toys, in food, or on other perches, I have a hard time moving them! I do rotate perches, and as I've found about 3 "arrangements" that work poop-wise, I do switch things up every once in awhile. One of the reasons I want a much bigger cage for Ollie someday is just so there is room for more variety!

My guys usually have 4-6 toys in their cages at a time, and that doesn't include swings. (Winston only has two at the moment, but I will be working on getting him used to new toys very soon). I rotate and bring in 1-2 new/refurbished toys every week. Although Jerry is pickier about his toys. He really loves a few select toys and plays with them nonstop, so I tend to leave those in as long as his interest in them is still high. Sometimes he'll barely touch a new toy, it's hit and miss with him. But he always has at least 2 favorites at all times. Lulu destroys almost everything so she's the one I like to keep occupied at all times with new chewable toys. Jerry's not a destroyer, he just plays and plays and rings bells and swings off of things - although he has went to town on a kabob recently. Lulu half-chewed the kabob and lost interest so I stuck it in Jerry's cage to see if he liked it, and man it's been about 3 weeks now and the kabob is down to the nitty gritty. Every time I change his papers there's a big pile of shavings!

I don't rotate perches, just the toys. Like everyone else said, once I find an arrangement where they can easily get around and aren't pooping on anything, I don't change it.
