Default How many here are cockatoo owners?

I would have posted this in the cockatoo forum, but didn't want to take the chance of it being overlooked.

I am very interested to see how many cockatoo owners we have here. I am also equally interested in seeing what kind of cockatoos you own for many reasons. I think it would be interesting to use this thread as a reference for when we have a question on a specific species. This way in the future, it would be easy to look up who owns the same species and direct our questions.

Also, if you could please list how you have attained your cockatoo(s), their sex and age.... this may also be helpful.

Moderators, please feel free to move this thread to the cockatoo forum if you feel it needs to be, or after it has had ample time in PC to be viewed by all.

I'll start.

I have a 3 year old, male Umbrella Cockatoo named Rico. Bought from a pet store.

I also have a 9 year old, male Moluccan Cockatoo named Rocky. Adopted from a rescue.

Lara - I don't actually "own" one here at my house, but I have a little buddy at the store who is an Eleanora. Her name is Bobbie. She is not for sale. She does the greatest tricks and learns more and more on her own every day! She takes her pellet, throws it in the air and catches it. She will also take the pellet, put it in her wing and toss it in the air and catch it. She almost never misses! I have decided we are not going to sell her, as I fear someone will buy her just because of her tricks. I cannot believe how intelligent she is!

For over 10 years I was owned by a fully adult male M2 who thought he was my husband. He died, and a large part of me did, too. Then, last year I was given a 4 or 5 y/o female U2 named Gracie. She liked us all, and after a few months seemed to be growing an affinity for Z, most especially. Time was our enemy, though, as it turned out I am now extremely allergic to cockatoos, and we rehomed Gracie with a nice young woman who loves her dearly. Nowadays, I can only admire them on a short-term basis. More than a 1/2 hour or so, and I can barely breathe in their presence. Doesn't stop me from being extremely tempted by every sweet 'too I meet, though!

Izzy is a female Umbrella Cockatoo. She will be turning 4 years old this coming October. Izzy is my seond parrot and I got her from a pet shop.

Izzy is my houdini (a master escape artist). She is very mechanical and creative in her play. I give her strips of leather and she will weave and knot them all on her own through the bars of her cage. I think she is one of my smartest and most clever birds!!

This is Izzy, my little doll baby. I took these photos of her last month:

I have a 15 year old Citron Too named Nelly. She was actually a present to me. I worked in a bird store and she came to us as a baby. Time went by and it seemed no one wanted to buy her. One week I had 2 days off together and when I came back the rest of the crew said she had turned into a basket case. No one could get near her. I immediately went to her cage and it was if she sighed with relief that someone she knew was there. I tried to work with her but to no avail. She just shrieked and shuddered and shook if anyone came near her. As you might have figured by now she could not be sold and I could not afford to buy her. One night I came in to work and 2 of my customers were there along with the rest of the gang. It was my birthday. The two ladies handed me a card and inside was the sales receipt for my "Nervous Nelly"!!! We have been together ever since. So when people say a bird does the choosing I can certainly attest to that!!!

Cockatoo owners? Let me rephrase that - "How many here are owned by Cockatoos?" ME!!! 1 M2, Sunshine, age 29 - she was a rescue.
1 G2, Heidi, age 8 - I have a friend who breeds Goffins and made the fatal mistake of checking out her newest clutch - Heidi waddled over and plunked herself in my hand right after her feeding and went to sleep - I was hooked!
1 RB2, Widget, age 1 1/2 yrs - I always said if a Rosebreasted too ever came
in for placement in my adoption program he wasn't leaving - and he didn't!
(only waited 10 yrs. for this to happen and inspite of all the little problems we've had it's been worth every second!)

How long have you had your M2? What is her demeanor like at 29 years old?

You've had your G2 the whole 8 years, correct?

How long has Widget been with you? I remember you posting before. You've recently found out Widget is allergic to Chammomile, correct?
