Default Growing old with your Fids

Has everyone made plans for the future with your birds? I have been thinking about that a lot and using statistical information to plan.

Longevity - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quote:
Spain:. . . . . 81.02 years in 2002, 82.31 years in 2005
Australia: . . 80 years in 2002, 80.39 years in 2005
Italy:. . . . . . 79.25 years in 2002, 79.68 years in 2005
France: . . . .79.05 years in 2002, 79.60 years in 2005
Germany: . . 77.78 years in 2002, 78.65 years in 2005
UK: . . . . . . 77.99 years in 2002, 78.4 years in 2005
USA: . . . . . 77.4 years in 2002, 77.7 years in 2005
So most of us have an average life expectancy of 77 years plus, barring unforseen circumstances.

Here's some interesting articles I found for estate planning for pets.

A lot of animal shelters here will adopt out senior dogs & cats to seniors with an agreement that they will care for them if the human dies or becomes incapacitated. Many folks are afraid to adopt lest they leave their companion alone. Maybe they can extend it to our feathered friends as well.

Well we are really young (21 & 24), so hopefully this won't be an issue. But if something were to happen they are going to my best friend temporarily. She has agreed to keep them as long as it would take to get them into good homes. We have talked about this alot and I have told her what I would want in a good caregiver for them. I wish I knew more bird people around me that would care for them. If we have children and they are old enough, I would love for them to take the fids.

Well...right there is the whole reason I had kids...to take my birds when I die! JK, but really the fids go to the kids when we are gone. Which will be nice. The fids will stay in the family. The seven year old already has dibs!

Tara,

This is a great post.

My birds, even the new one that is not even here yet, are all going to be listed in my will.

My 15 y/o already said he wants the Fids so for me it is a no brainer.

Should something happen to me now, Matt would take Ollie. Should something happen to the both of us, my parents would take her. Should something happen to us way into the future, I'm hoping our kids would take her.

I know if something happened to me two or three of my fids would be re homed by Kelly. My instructions are simple. If the birds need to be re homed due to tragedy of any kind. Start here. I'm pretty sure you folks won't steer them wrong.

It's always easy to say the 'kids will take em'...

What if things change in their lives, what if they don't really WANT them when it comes time? Then what do you do? Do you leave it up to them to drop them off at a shelter ( because they really don't care) or do you come to a point in your life when it's just 'time' to find a good home for them?

Personally, if I'm going to 'leave' a bird to my friend or family, I'd prefer that bird to spend some time with them before I die to make sure they care for the bird in such a way that I would be proud, even if it meant 10 yrs before I go!
