Default Remember those Grey Cheek Parakeets?

We have a customer who boards their Grey Cheek with us. He was recently in the store. What a sweetheart!

Does any remember these little gems? I'd give my right arm to have another one. Mine passed away several years ago. What a wonderful bird.

I have to confess I know nothing about them, but I'm gonna go Googling.

Kathie,
I am sorry about your baby. I would love to learn more about them. They sound wonderful.

My daughter has a Grey Cheek Parrot, Peepers, who is now 18 yrs. old! What a character he is - talks up a storm and lets you know who's boss! He has all the personality of a larger parrot all wrapped up in one little green body!

Joel has one named Skycap that I absolutely adore. Does anyone know of any breeders of these little guys? From my understanding, these guys were plentiful in the 70's but since no longer imported, they are very hard to find. But I can't believe someone out there is not breeding these little guys.

If you Google hard enough, you'll see there are a few breeders in the States who are collecting many of that family they can get - to bring it back. I was really interested a few years ago & found out about them & their close cousins. But none in Canada to my knowledge. Unfortunately many computer crashes later - i don't have the links .... I'll see...BROTEGERIS is the species.

North West Exotic Bird Society lists one breeder..... NWEBS - Members

Grey Cheek ~ info: The Grey-cheeked Parakeet Web Site

Yahoo even has a small group devoted to this bird.

Some excellent photos ~ Brotogeris Photos

Kel........ Skycap is the only one of his species that I have ever seen in person and I have been with birds for 15 yrs. now approx..... He truly is a lil gem - as you saw....... I wanted to breed him (I think he is a he as he tries to hump (can I say that?) my hand - unless he is just a horny lil she?) but I could never find him a gal-friend of his own species....... Note: His pelvic bones are tight normally but when he does the "wild thing", they seem to spread. Hmmmmm

Ok, disclaimer time: (for some of you naughty minded people - you know who you are: ... : No, I do not sit around all day allowing my birds to hump me. ......

Pat and Joel - you are so fortunate! Mine passed about 5 years ago. I really miss him. I have searched everywhere for them. Seems they were a dime a dozen years ago (all imports) and not too many people thought to hold them back as breeders. I don't think they do well breeding in captivity (although sounds like Skycap is the exception to that theory!). I did find one lady who was a breeder, but just last year decided to sell her breeder pairs, as I believe she had taken ill. She, of course, was not at liberty to release the name of the person who bought them.

Would love to have one again. They are wonderful litte birds.

Kathie..... Skycap used to be such a loud-mouthed pain in the butt. I actually re-homed him 3 times to 3 different people/families who could give him more attention than I could back then. However, I asked each new keeper/owner to please return him to me (I would re-fund their $$ or most of it of course) if for any reason they were not happy with him or just did not want to keep him anymore, again for whatever reason - etc......

All 3 times, he came back to me (LOL), the last time after 2&1/2 years! I figured by then that it was just meant to be (or some goofy concept IMO - like "fate" telling me I should never let him go again) that I should remain his forever Daddy - LOL. Now he is my most spoiled bird at the Compound - he gets his way with everything! He even suckered Kelly into loving him to death during her visit.

I'm still wanting to get him a mate, so if anyone ever finds someone breeding them or wanting to re-home theirs, please let me know.

If he ever gets on your nerves again.... you can send him my way! Mine was a bit noisy - and very territorial. If I merely moved something in HIS room - you would think the sky was falling! He'd squawk until the item was put back in its original place - and God forbid I DARED to vacuum. I literally could not change anything - but I got a kick out of it! He had a personality larger than a macaw. He unfortunately passed prematurely at about 20 years old - not due to illness but due to malpractice by a vet.
