The owner of the bird store that I go to called me to ask if I would bird sit for a customers Macaw. He gave me the phone #, I called the lady then went to her house to meet the bird (B&G) She said she would bring him to my house for me to care for him. Was going to pay me $100 for the week she would be gone. Well...once I saw the poor bird - I had to tell her I couldn't do it unless she took him to the Vet first. I swear his nails were 3-4 inches long. His cage was filthy and I'm talking poop and seed two inches thick on the floor and perch (he only had 1) was encrusted with poop. His dish was full but...With only Sunflower seed.

Oh no!!! As if you need another thing to deal with! What do you think she will do? That is so sad.

I really believe there are no coincidences. That bird needed you to go there. The horror.

What did the woman reply then?

Oh my! Some people..really! I just don't understand. How could anyone allow such a situation? It it totally ridiculous! It costs NOTHING to keep a cage clean. Honestly. And I don't know about there, but here it's only $15 for a nail trim at the vets office.

It's saddening at best. That poor bird. I too believe everything happens for a reason. That bird did indeed need you to show up! Do you think that she will do something about it?

Where are the bird police when you need them? Maybe we should start a neighborhood watch!

Good on ya Susan! Not everyone would have said something. That bird needed you to do what you did. And you never know....you have to protect your flock too.

I just didn't want to be blamed if this bird should become sick while in my care.

Poor, poor thing! Living like that for years and years, no freedom, a terrible diet, in discomfort, alone, most likely sick by now... no hope, no light at the end of the tunnel.

I know that you guys take good care of your birds but stories like these bring to light the terrible conditions most pet birds have to live with under people's care. It's too hard to care for them properly, people don't have the time, the energy or the desire to do it and, I got news for you, there is no bird police to correct the situation!

Susan I don't blame you, I wouldn't have done it either. But will take further steps? Maybe mention the situation to the store? Maybe the woman needs a lesson on diet and hygene! I would've been livid. I can't stand to see filth. And it only costs 10 bucks here for a nail trim.

Let's kidnap him!
