Re: Got a call from the bird store Susan, this is such a sad thing to hear. Its not uncommmon though, at least not here. Pet stores are so overspriced and with the economy like it is, I'm not as worried about the birds there as I am the birds from the breeders. They sell them hundreds on dollars cheaper to the point where ANYONE can purchase the 'pretty birdie'. Everytime I go to a show, a coo ever every baby there. And I know that half of these precious babies are probably not going to get the proper home. The shows attract people who are just bored, like the 'idea' (what idea?) of having a georgous bird for friends to marvel over, or their kid wants a 'pet polly'. I really can't stand it! Its the people who have the higher financial status that are usually the culprits of the CL rehomes. I can't tell you how many times I've been over to people's homes (BIG, EXPENSIVE homes) and the bird is just set in a corner, right along the lines of this poor B&G. Its so sad...
I have been thinking the same thoughts a Jared. I think that there needs to be a permit system in place. There are way too many birds bred here and rescues are overflowing. Too many people can't/don't deal with the maturing bird and would just rather start over. If there was a permit system in place, at least that would stop the people who just like the 'idea' from purchasing something that they have no idea about.
I apologize about the rambling...Its just so sad to see so many birds forgotten about and not cared for... |
