I almost did that once to the guy across the street. He found a Scarlet and was keeping him in a med. size dog crate. I was in Ohio when he first got him. When I came home, I gave him a cage and educated him on care and diet instead. If he hadn't improved, I would have taken him when I knew the guy would be gone.

I did go to the store and let them know about their customer.

I know many are against re-homing their birds - & so many do it in a blink - this person must have justlost interest but never thought to offer it a better home.

Filth is a personal matter - how many times have I seen people living in filth & totally unaware. For a B&G or any pet to be cooped up like that - well, it is just terrible.

I hope something good comes of this - didn't the woman seem at all aware? - especially after your comments?!!

I do see that you could have been in a bad spot if the bird manifest illness while with you - not to mention your own bird's health.

Her home was very clean and, huge in an elite part of town. Some people just don't care I guess.
The Bird Store guy called me and asked if I would be interested in showing new bird owners how to care for their birds. I'm going to do it.

YAY! actually, I work in a petstore, They take decent care of the birds. However the staff there doesn't know much about any species...I love animals and working in/with/around them so I thought that a a pet store would be nice. I do not work for a large chain, rather a locally owned store, and I have been offically been dubbed the 'bird whisperer' by my bosses and they want me to sit down with them and educate them on birds, but besides that they point everyone with bird questions to me! I dont care because I then get the chance to educate them about cage requirements-diet-etc. and its great, though I cannot get everyone on my level, I try to influence them as much as possible, not only that I love reading here because it gives me knoweldge of other things I may not have read or been able to experience with my own flock of 4.

oops off topic... I wish every store had people like us to tell people that yes birds need foods other than seeds, and a parakeet cannot live in the cheapest smallest cage we have- 5 by 6 by 13.(about)... not only that people are ignorant when it comes to buying the birds they think they know EVERYTHING!!!

If that woman has time to go on vacation she has time to take care of her bird. I sure hope she makes some changes in her and her birds life.

If she has the money it took to build that house, she has money to hire someone to care for her birds. She was going to pay me $100 for the week in my home - she could pay a local teen $20 a week to come in and clean the cage, play with the bird...a few times a week.

I'm going in to talk to him on Monday.
It would be an on-call thing, or, by appointment. I would also feed the babies.
